9800GX2 vs 8800 Ultra. *Crysis Benchmark Results*

Thread Starter
I thought this would be interesting to a lot of people. I did some testing with my 8800 Ultra overclocked to some pretty nice speeds last night to compare against the 9800GX2 I picked up from Fry's today. Let me say, I am very impressed.

First of all the 9800GX2 is roughly 10C cooler than my 8800 Ultra if not more. During the benchmark tests that follow I was only saw 71C load temps whereas my Ultra overclocked would get up to 89 at times, usually around 81-85 when not OC'd playing Crysis.

EDIT: I noticed some stuttering issues, and at 1900x1200 DX10 the temps can get up to 76C. For reference, I am using the 174.70 drivers because they allow me to take decent screenshots. This may be the cause of some of the problems here.

EDIT2: Added DX10 results at 1280x1024. I reverted to 174.52 drivers and this seemed to make an improvement so far at this resolution (the first run I had about 52 FPS with the 174.70 drivers, which is why I didn't post them). These drivers cause banding with screencaps.

NOTE: Scroll down for higher resolution comparison and benchmark runs.

Anyway the results thus far.

8800 Ultra (702/1728/1188) 1280x1024 High NoAA/AF 32-bit DX9 Vista 64

8800 Ultra (702/1674/1150) 1280x1024 High NoAA/AF 64-bit DX10 Vista 64

9800GX2 (670/1674/1000) 1280x1024 High NoAA/AF 32-bit DX9 Vista 64

9800GX2 (725/1836/1053) 1280x1024 High NoAA/AF 32-bit DX10 Vista 64

I seem to be having some issues with DirectX10 on the 9800GX2 for some reason, the FPS increase is only about 6-7 which I can't imagine is right, I will do some updates to DX10 and see. I will update this thread in a bit.
As you can see though, the increase so far is rather dramatic. I also have benchmarks with the 8800Ultra at 1900x1200 and will add these to this hopefully before the morning (off tomorrow).

NVidia.

I hate to say it, but you better well hope it beats the 8800 Ultra

I can't see the first screen.

How about that, minimum fps is the same with the last 2 tests.

Crank up the res while your at it.

Maybe is getting higher FPS cause you are running the test in Dx9?

Not a big deal. I will return it to Fry's if I am not impressed. So far I am hit or miss, because of some of the stuttering issues I am noticing. And frankly the game I play the most (Team Fortress 2) I am still getting ugly drops in framerates, almost no different (if not worse, because of the stuttering) than the 8800 Ultra. *revises title*

Well I ran them both in DX9 at the same resolution, that is the screenshot you see. Still pretty hefty difference there, not replicated in DX10 I am afraid.

You know that is interesting, if you look at the triangles/sec, there is something not reporting right (actually on second look it isn't actually interesting, seems normal). I can vouch that it did indeed seem much faster. I am going to actually play the game for a bit and report back. I fixed the first screencap, I hope.

OK. So, here is 1900x1200 on Very High DX10. Not all that great. I am actually getting a bit concerned. I notice some stuttering issues while playing TF2. Not sure if it is the beta drivers I am using 174.70, but those are the only ones that will let me take screenshots that aren'y complete junk. UGH. Anyway....a couple more to look at.

9800GX2 (Stock) DX10 Very High 1900x1200

9800GX2 DX10 High 1900x1200 (Stock)

Compare the 88800 Ultra on DX9 (I forgot to do a DX10 run with the Ultra, I am pretty sure it would have eaten my puter). I will do a DX9 run at 1900x1200 on the 9800GX2 for reference however.

8800 Ultra (684/1728/1188) DX9 1900x1200 High

9800GX2 (Stock) | DX9 1900x1200 High

This is a pretty amazing improvement in my book.

I've had all kinds of DX10 issues with the benchmark and 1.2 patch. Try the 1.1 patch if you'd like. Fixed some of my issues. I still have issues with AA and the benchmark tool.

Interesting. I was almost embarrased for the 9800 to post the 1280 DX10 results, seemed so pathetically low. I looked at the actual thread for the Benchmark tool and I can see that wired is getting about the same DX10 FPS as he did for his DX9 at 1280, so I know it must be with a driver, let me check maybe he says what drivers he is using.
