3870 Overclocking?

Thread Starter
How does the 3870 overclock, especially on water. Can I expect 900ish?

I imagine that the 3870 Crossfire is faster than the 3870X2 when the GPU clocks are the same. Anyone have any input on this?

Thanks

3870x2 vr. 3870 in CrossfireX looks about the same from what i have seen.

I bet highly i can get 900mhz on stock cooling on the 3870 (you'll need more voltage.) People have seen it up to 1ghz with BIOS mods, no idea on the cooling for that. Up to 2400mhz on the memory, which is what mine is at right now.

You should be able to do at least close to 900 with stock air cooling, but with the fan at 100%... say if you have headphones you'll be fine.

This is a good thread at xtremsystems' forum on how to Vmod/OC a 38x0 card with modded BIOSes to remove the clock limitations built in the default BIOS. You just need to browse a bit to find the BIOS you need.

Other than that, I think you can OC two 3870 further than a 3870X2, so this would make them a bit faster potentially. Otherwise they must be the same at the same clocks, but then again, the 3870 has GDDR4@2.2GHz while the X2 had GDDR3@1.8GHz. Things look better for the 3870Crossfire setup imo.

depends on if your card has the unlocked bios. Luckily my HIS 3870 came with the unlocked bios. However, with stock volts I predict 875-891 real with stock cooling. With 1.43v (not really pushing it until I vmod the X2's) and with an mcw60 I get 945 real that passes 45 mins of atitool with about 35c at load

stock cooling stock voltage I have managed 904mhz on the core without artifacts. upped the voltage doing a pencil mod to 1.43v and now I'm running at 945 core while still using the stock cooler.

hope that helps.
