What's killing Abilor's internet connection?

Hey all,

A confounding problem. About five days ago, my downstairs neighbor came up to use our networked all-in-one printer to scan something. For the first time ever, the system failed. I blamed the printer and the neighbor at first, but the plot thickened. Around the same time, my wife's internet connection was a little wonky, and I noticed that when I was connected, my adapter in the lower right in vista would freeze. I would leave SMP folding going, or Newsbin or something and when I came back I could not access the wireless connection by right-clicking on it, it was just unresponsive. I also noticed the system was kinda locked, and the task manager told me that "NT system and kernel" was sucking up 25% of my CPU (which I take as one core maxed on some odd process).

The more generic problem is that usually when I am on newsbin downloading some binaries, my speed is about 13.9 mbps, or 1.9 MBps. Now it only gets to about 8, and also intermittently flails around, and then sticks at 0 or something piddly, like 50 kbps.

SO. Time to go to target and get a new router! I thought. The first router was a DGL-4300 (dlink) and I'd had it for two years. A reasonable lifespan. I picked up the Belkin G+ MIMO last night, and today, exactly the same damn problems.

So I can't tell if it's the 1.) Cable modem (doubt it, but hey, why not) 2.) the router (99% not likely now) or 3.) something Vista 64 SP1 is doing to the network as a whole. Maybe an update killed me?

I've done all the obvious things like reboot all the modems, routers, and machines. Tried reseating my network adapter in diff. PCI slot, etc. But the problem seems to affect the LAN as a whole. Reinitialized my TCP/IP stack, just in case, ipconfig, etc.

Ideas? Something I've overlooked?

BTW, I use encrypted usenet traffic, so it's not my ISP (premium roadrunner) doing packet shaping either.

Well you should call your ISP and have them ping your connection and see what they get. I would not be surprised if your modem was on the outs I remember when mine died I had similar problems for weeks before.

Will try that. But as far as disconnecting the printer from the LAN? Coincidence?

Well, whatever the issue is, it's with my ISP methinks. I isolated the system down to my laptop hardwired directly into the cable modem, and got the fluctuating usenet download rate of doom. I *doubt* it's the modem, only because my ISP is known for their sheer idiocy. I hate calling too, because you have to work your way up the ladder through the tech support grunts, the guy who thinks you're hysterical and then says, "hokay mah friend, whut ya need ta do is turn the modem off..... and then back on again. Let's see where we're at after that." The whole process taked three hours when I finally get a guy who says, "yup. that sucks. Time Warner does not guarantee a minimum bandwidth however. Good luck and good night."
