It may sound silly and I think the answer is no, but can anyone give me insight? I'd like it if it were possible.

No i have same card and P5E mobo and its not possible. Both your and mine mobos are x38 chipset which means its crossfire only.

Can't do SLI on this intel chipset board. P5E3 is DDR3 ram. Board plus ram costs a ton just gain few percentages of performance boost. Depending on your budget and upgrade path, get a evga 680i A1 if you don't plan to upgrade to 45nm quad. Otherwise, get an evga 780i board.

Well, I won't be going to 45 for awhile but I want to be ready for it when I do, as I can't upgrade again for quite a bit. That's why I dont mind paying a bit more now. The board, mem, and chip (Q6600) together will run me about $800 and thats ok. I thought about a 680i/780i board but I've read on other posts that they're not as stable and consistent with overclocks.

Evga 680i/780i A1 board is fine for Q6600.

Q6600 $235
Evga 680i A1 $200
2GB DDR2-800 RAM $50
2x 8800GT $320

ok. ill buy that (***edit- not so sure now- http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA== )
but my next question is just how good is 2x ati boards with crossfire? I had an ati board before i got my BFG 6800 oc (an amazing board still IMO) and nvidia's had it all over ati lately. Crossfire really any good?

*edit* I also like the X83 boards as they will set me up for better mem upgrades down the road, rather than being locked into ddr2. Thought i saw a board that supported ddr2 AND ddr3 but cant find it again.

Crossfire is good. Its scale is better than SLI. All you need to do is to replace 2x GT with 2x 3870. What board do you have?

what i've seen from hardocp about the 3870 doesnt make me feel confident about ATI's stuff. Guessing I'll stick with the 8800GT or 8800GTX now. Thank you for your help though.
