Need Some Help With OC'ing

Thread Starter
Ok, ill say it straight, im a nub at OC'ing but ive only tried it twice.
One time was on NVIDIA nTune which made my pc restart and come back "microsoft has recovered from a serious error", and the other time was when i found an old P3 on the side of the road. The little white switches in the blue case on the board - i was playing around with em - originally it was a P3 733Mhz and i got it up to 835~, but then i went to start windows and it said that "WINDOWS/SYSTEM/CONFIG" was not found or something. I returned it back to normal specs and it worked. Plus, when i got it to the 800 range my ram was cut from 256 to 165mb (using old SD RAM found in the machine too). Was this overclocking?

Anyway to my main idea. I have an AMD Athlon x2 4200+ Brisbane, socket AM2 or AM2+ dunno, in CPU-Z it says AM2. I wanted to make it about 2.6, something medium you know? I got to the AMI setup screen, i think its in config, i choose the AMD overcloking config or something like that. I found out that my multiplier is set to x11 and that's the max it will go!!! ***?

Although, i was thinking, that it also gave me a choice of voltage, either 1.1~, 1.3~ or 1.5~ im not sure on the exact digits. Could increasing the voltage from 1.3~, which its already on, to 1.5~ give me more multiplier options? Say x14, cos the bus speed is 200mhz so 14x200 is 2.8Ghz which would be SWEET!!!

Would i also need a bigger power supply, im using the one that came with my computer, some no branded or small branded asian one. 550W ATX "SunPro"
Also, would this affect any other voltage of my system? ie. GPU's HDD's? thanks!!

Probably not a good idea to mess with the voltages at the start.

This guide helped me a lot at the start >

don't bother with nTune.

go into BIOS. set 240 HTT, set HTT multi to 4.
set RAM divider such that the memory is at a reasonable speed, adjust timings as necessary. for an extreme beginner I'd say that your kit SHOULD do
DDR2-600 3-3-3 1T DDR2-800 4-4-4, 1T DDR2-1000 5-5-5 1T at 2.0-2.2V if not then go +1 to all for the sake of brevity. CPU voltage should be fine, most newer athlons get 2.7+Ghz on stock volts.

if you need in depth info PM me, I'll admit I haven't touch an AMD board since 2 years ago when I was clocking an opteron 165 way up there but it's largely the same under AM2

Apocolypze, welcome to the forum

Here is an excellent AM2 overclocking guide: http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ocket-am2.html. This guide should show you the process for everthing. It is very helpful.

A bigger power supply would be overkill. Even at 550w that is overkill. I do however suggest ditching the generic power supply and going with something that is a little bit more built with quality. The Corsair HX and VX series appears to be quite popular for it's quality and reliable status. Make sure to purchase something with a 12volt rail of at least 30amps. Wattage wise I would not worry. That whole rig probably comes close to 200watts full load.

Good luck and let us know if that guide helped
