PNY 7900GS 256MB. Worth the upgrade over a 8600GT?

Thread Starter
Later I'm gonna try and score a deal on a PNY 7900GS 256MB. Its gonna end up about $40 give or take a few bucks. I have a BFG 8600GT 512MB already, I know the 7900GS is a bit faster but is this a worthwhile upgrade? If i remember correctly the 7 series doesnt do hardware decoding of HD video and i got the xbox 360 drive and the cpu usage seems pretty high when its playing movies, up to 60%. So I'm just wondering if its worth it.
It works

I would say no. The 8600GT is a decent card, plus it has bonus features. If you can sell the 8600GT for more than you bought the 7900GS for, then maybe. That way, you can have a good card, and make a little money.

Its probably not worth it, you won't see a big difference in performance between the 2. Save up and get an 9600gt/8800gt then you will see a big performance increase.

Just save up your pennies for a DX10 GPU.

You don't want to go from DX10 to 9 right? Unless, if you dont plan on playing any future games.

A 9600GT would be a great upgrade compared to either card and they can be had for as low as $138 after MIR. Also I have seen 8800GTS with the G92 core as low as $230 after MIR so if you have some extra cash and want a huge increase compared to what you have you could go that route.

Mmm...cheap 8800GTS...

No. 8600GT is dx10 and doing better than 7900GS. Here is the chart. If you have tight budget, may take look at $110 8800GS.

Yup, 7900GS is a downgrade, not an upgrade. There's a lot you can do to the 8600GT to get it running decent until you can save up for a better card. Throw a $30 Coolermaster Coolviva Pro SE w/ AS5 and some ramsinks (comes with HSF) or equivalent cooler on there, do a simple pencil volt mod, and overclock it. I'm at 920 core, 940 memory (1880 effective), and 2024 shader, and my best score in 3DMark06 so far is 8,046 with an Athlon64 X2 4800+ @ 2.91GHz on 171.23 beta drivers. Plays Crysis at 1280x720 (720p, I use an HDTV) on medium settings just fine, and plays every other game I own on full high settings at 1080p (1920x1080) without any problems (HL2, Prey, NFS, GTA: SA, Madden, etc etc). With the aftermarket cooling it stays at 41*C at idle and ~60*C full load. All upgrades cost me $35 and a couple hours. It really is a decent card.
