[tcMag] Black Edition Phenom 9600 overclocked to 3.25GHz - Page 2

That's not bad. But AMD are only just at the point where Intel was 2 years ago.

Good job for amd, dont be surprised that they didnt do better because of the air cooling, it would have been nice to see the difference in performance between the two speeds.

has anyone else noticed that AMD has decided to NOT try the high end market, and instead go to the media center style? media centers are taking over most houses and the spider platform is perfect for that. good job amd, picking up a fairly large part of the market at a decent price. with media centers, who cares if it overclocks as long as its cool an quiet and by most reports thats true

amd has a good i dea with staying with silicon for now, but they need to introduce a better architecture of the core it self. it's only a matter of time before intel screws up on something, and the race ensues.

QFT/ It's actually a smart move to make because the HTPC market is an emerging market that has a LOT of potential. They're going after where Intel's Viiv failed. The high-end market is very lucrative but is very low volume. Once they package a AIW card with the 780G chipset and a 45W Brisbane, HTPC system integrators are going to love it.

Back to the 3.25GHz Phenom, that's good to hear, but it still the execption rather than the norm to see such a high clocking part. The C2Qs are all hitting that without effort. It's great to see AMD working their way back up, but they still have a lot of work to do.

Okay. Phenom just got put back on the table for a low cost quad core build. Q6660 should still be preferred but those of really tight budgets have an alternative.

This was done with a B2 Stepping part with the TLB fix disabled. B3 probably will not be faster per clock, although yields have improved in the meantime which means better OC potential and 2.5 Ghz parts.

AMD needs 45nm to be a bigger improvement than it was for Intel to be competitive. The fastest B3 Phenom is still not as good as a B3 Q6600, and it will be more expensive to boot. Remember, the 45nm Intel parts are 10-15% faster than Q6600 per clock; hence probably 25% faster than Phenom. And they clock higher.

AMD does still have a cost advantage over 45nm Quads though, the Q9300 is a $300 part.

Q9300 should settle to $266 and Q9450 to $316, while the Q6600 has a scheduled price cut to ~$220 in April.

If this isn't fake (and not a suicide shot) it's a step in the right direction for Phenom overclocks. I do have my reservations as to whether this is true as I would've thought the person who managed the overclock would be running around forums such as XS showing what he's done and benchmarks to go with it.
