I don't know whether my processor is holding me back though. It's a 4000+ San Diego overclocked to 3GHz. I've been thinking of paying out money for an Opteron 185 or an FX-60 if I can get hold of one cheap and second hand on eBay, but I don't know whether I'll get much of a performance increase in single threaded applications. If someone said "Absolutely you would!", then I'd pay out the money.

Incidentally, I was hoping to get an ATI card as a replacement...While nVidia cards give better framerates, I feel ATI cards give slightly better picture quality.
yes try to get a dual core for cheap you 3D mark 06 may increase by like 2500 points

My Pro gets 5000 in 06 with my cpu at 3.1.

For an upgrade I'd look at the 3870, I'm actually looking at getting one very soon too. I've been watching newegg and they are dropping like they said they were going to. The HIS is down to $169.99, MSI is at $184.99 with $20 MIR. and the Sapphire Toxic edition is down to $192.99!

A friend of mine has an 8800GTS, I'm going to test his graphics card in my rig to see whether it's worth upgrading from my poor, old and tired single core 4000+ San Diego to an Opty 185, or whether it's better to bite the bullet and get a new GFX card...Only got a second X1950 Pro in mid-October last year for just over $200

go with a HD3870 for 175.00$

or go with a HD3870x2 for 400.00$

those will both blow the socks off nvidia

Tested my friend's 8800GT 512MB and got a massive framerate increase in all games and could even put most of them up to maximum detail levels at 1440x900, full AA and AF and still get very good frame rates (40 or 50 fps+ compared to under 20 for the same settings on my CrossFire ATI cards)!
