[3dnews] 8800GT 2Gig Vram! - Page 3

To be honest, it they were only a very small premium over the 512mb ones, why not get it? Sure, it's pointless right now, but hopefully 3d game makers will be increasing the amount of HD textures in games soon, meaning more need for video ram, and even if it sat there unused for most games, what if it kept you from having to upgrade for a couple months?

They need a way to let the computer system "borrow" extra video ram.

You know some idiot with more money than brains will be first in line at his specialty PC shop ready to fork out money for this thing. Hmm...

Note to self: find said idiot, steal said money, buy a good card.

The problem is that the 256-bit memory bus cannot fully allocate anything over 512MB VRAM. Doesn't matter whether a game uses mega high textures or not.

Why? My dual channel 128-bit effective bus does just fine for my 4gb of regular ddr2. Sure it would not be ideal, but it would still be usable. Your bus will only limit transfer speeds.

All of my 2GB RAM modules are allocated by the 64-bit DDR2 slot

Thank you for bringing that up. I've always asked that. RAM is on a 64bit bus, yet it can allocate up to 8 gigs on most computers. so why cant a 256 bit bus have 2 gigs.
