If you replace the motherboard you'll require a new operateing system lisence as well which will increase the upgrade cost. If anyone ever advises you to try using software, such as ClockGen, to overclock your CPU, ignore them. It's not just the fact that the BIOS is locked that makes proprietary machines bad for overclocking, it's the fact that they also consist of poor quality components on the motherboard itself, along with cheap run-of-the-mill PSU's.

The Gigabyte P35-DS3L or ABIT IP35-E are both compatible with DDR2 RAM and your PCI-Express 8600GT.

Yo.....are there any jumper pins on motherboard?.......or check the actual board model number and find out the original manufacturer, sometimes you can get away with flashing OEM BIOS in favor of the original board manufacturer.........if all fails try SetFSB 2.0. compatible with most motherboards, even OEM. If you do decide to switch out your motherboard, make sure your CPU is unlocked, otherwise have to buy new CPU as well. Laterz.....

I wouldn't be surprised if your model is just another model number, but with the locks in place. Dunno about the CPU lock... Never heard of it before, to be honest.

Use Asus Update and update the Bios through windows

Thanks mate. I tried that but when i run setup it says 'unable to detect ASUS BIOS' which i know i have 'Phoenix-Award BIOS v6.00PG' then it says 'setup program can detect no ASUS motherboard, setup will now be aborted' even though my motherboard is an ASUS P5LP-LE Leonite 2??? Weird, but theses are the kind of dead ends ive been running into. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

just to clear things up for some people, a locked bios usually comes from a big manufacturer such as dell or hp. It means that it greys out options such a clock speeds and does not let you change them. Pretty much the most fun you can have with a locked bios is changing the system time, which you would only ever have to do if windows wouldn't boot and you were desperate to change the clock.
