Spraypaint.

Thread Starter
I have a Antec P182 that I'm planning on modding a bit, and I wanted to spraypaint all the metal housing black. Right now I'm planning on using Krylon Ultra Flat (My black spraypaint of choice, I use it on all my artwork and everything else I spraypaint), but my friend has brought up three points that I decided to ask you guys.

1. Do I need a special kind of paint that will cling to this material? Will I have to prime it at all?

2. Will the paint width stand the heat form the components?

3. Will I need a certain finish to go over the paint?

Also if you have painting tips please let me know.

Strip all the components.

Clean it really well - and keep your greasy fingerprints off it once it's clean (latex gloves).

If you want the paint to stick...always best to use a good primer. No worries on heat...nothing anywhere on the case will get very warm.

1. It doesn't require any special material paint to cling, no. However, I would advise you sand down the old paint job and then do a few layers of primer on it. Once you do that, allow it to dry for a few days, around 3 or 4. Then use a small small grit of sandpaper and fix anything you messed up, or bumps etc, by lightly wetsanding the case.

Once you have done that, you will apply 3 or 4, or even 5 layers of black, with very thin thin thin layers. Allow that to dry for a few days as well, and then wetsand it again.

And finally, get yourself some clearcoat, and apply a few coats of that if you want that sexy reflective finish.

That's what I would advise

2. Yes. No problems there.

3. I would use clearcoat and get a beautiful glossy finish. Some people put tons of layers of clearcoat to achieve an almost mirror appearance.

Use car primer, that should get the best results.

I have seen people yield good finishes with Krylon in the past

i paint cars and i would sand the peices down first and clean them well. then use some self etching primer. paint a few thin coats on there of primer sand them again with some 220 grit sandpaper. clean once more then layer on the black thin and try not to run the paint. be slow and steady. if you are a grafitti cat you no doubt have some can control.

Self etching primer is the key for metal..but i would also sand it a lil first so it adhears well...sand with some 600 grit paper and it should do well. Also for finishing that paint your using sounds like its a matt finish, so if you want to keep a matt finish dont use any clear coat at the end, if you do want gloss, use the clear coat, 3 to 4 coats atleast.

Thank you guys. I think I will keep a matte finish, and I'm gonna do what you said and sand down the housing and use some car primer before spraying the black. I've unscrewed all the plastic from the case and hard drive cages, and it seems already to go, I'll update the thread with some pics after I get some stuff done. Thanks again for the info :]

im half assing my paint job and im just using some CAT medium gloss black that i took from my dad's work.

the way i see it, no matter how it turns out, its gona be way better than the stock grey. i may do the outside panels the "correct" way if they turn out ugly. but the inside ima leave alone.

I got Krylon for all of my panting supplies.

What I did was three coats of Krylon primer, sanded with 1000 grit sandpaper to make things smooth, added another thin coat. Of course I sanded before the primer as well.
