how do you turn off stupid shared memory

Thread Starter
I just recently upgraded a friends system to Vista Basic. The video card they had was too slow so we upgraded to a Visiontek x1300 PCI card and it is much better, however the system keeps allocating 64mb of my 1024 system memory to share with the videocard, and I cannot figure out how to disable this. There is no option in the bios, and I can't find one in windows either. I've tried ATItool, ATItray tools, and CCC, and I can't find anywhere that gives you an option to control this. Also I want to OC his card and I can't. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. System specs are as follows:

P4 3.2 prescott (478)

Asrock P4vm8 mobo

1GB supertalent pc 3200 400mhz

160gb maxtor DM10 Sata HD

Visiontek x1300 PCI vid card

Linksys wireless N adapter (usb)

D-link wirless G PCI adapter

1x cdrw optical drive

1x sandisk U3 micro 4 gb flash drive (readyboost enabled)

Thanks again, an rep+ forsure to anyone who can help.

Well if there isnt any options in the bios then your stuck with sharing. I wouldnt worry about losing 64mb. As for overclocking the vid card i dont know

It would be helpful if you told us more about the card, since it's low-end and thus not that well known to us.

So it has 256MB of RAM, right?

I know that on laptops there is often forced sharing, sometimes even when there is a dedicated video card, but I have never dealt with the personally.

What was the sequence of events? Turn off the computer, install the new hardware, and then do a fresh install of Vista Basic? Perhaps it's just some "feature" of Vista (or maybe Vista Basic only) that is supposed to help the low-end video card out.

It would certainly be nice to figure out how to turn it off, but I really don't think it will make much of a difference. (It may even be the case that performance is [slightly] better this way.)

even if you turn it off in Bios it still leachs from your system memory.
