It all depends on your price range. But the lowest I'd go for decent gaming is an 8800GS or 9600GT. They can be had for ~$140 and ~$150, respectively.

If you're on a tighter budget, you could opt for an 8600GT or 8600GTS. They won't be able to max out a lot of games, but they're decent cards for the price. They can be had for ~$75 and ~$100, respectively. You could also get an ATI HD3650 512MB for ~$75, as well. It performs similar to an 8600GT.
or he could wait for the 3830, AKA 3690, since its supposed to be in the sub $100 range

Ah yes, I've heard one of those (I'm still confused about the naming, lol) is supposed to be available soon.

Get an 8800GT, you can get em for like £140 now and it would probably outperform a 9600, yes even though 9600 is a bigger number than 8800

for single card solution i would recommend an 8800gt or 3870 at the least. if you want good frames in almost all games(crysis ftw ) that is the lowest i would go.
