Thread Starter
I had to reinstall my operating system b/c trying to go from 2GB to 4GB of RAM apparently is a no-no. anyway, now I have 2 instances of VISTA on my hard drive. How do I get rid of one of them?

What I would recommend is formating the drive with Western Digital's Data Lifeguard utility (offered as a downloadable ISO) and format the drive before installing the OS again.

If that isnt worth the hassle, then google how to edit the boot.ini file in Vista (if you where using XP I could tell you exactly), if there even is one that you can edit, so that you can remove the fast/detect option left over from the 8mb reminet from your previous installation.

If I had to guess, you do not have two VIsta installations present. It is just displaying two installs on the startup. Just edit your startup options to not prompt which OS you want to boot.

Just click on the pearl (official term for Vista's start button) and type msconfig in the search bar. In the System Configuration window that opens click the Boot tab and highlight the Vista that does not have ": Current OS;Default OS" and click Delete. Also make sure the box that says Timeout is set to 0 seconds.

The next time you reboot you will not get prompted on the startup which OS you want to boot.

Hope that helps, let me know if you need more help, and I'll help you get it straightened out.

a boot.ini doesnt exist in vista you have to edit the boot config with bcdedit.exe from the command prompt

Edit: i am editting this because i figure you wouldnt of asked if you knew how sorry...when you open that there will be two vista install paths and you need to find the path that doesnt exist anymore and remove that one. type the ? to view the commands and i think the only one you need is /delete. USE THIS WITH EXTREME CARE OR YOU WILL BE REINSTALLING AGAIN. type the string in as you see it

go to msconfig, you'll see the boot entries in there.

but what exactly do you mean you have 2 instances? you mean the files from the previous are still there? then that's fine you can leave them if you still need them or safely delete them
