XP Upgrade to what?

Thread Starter
Okay, I couldn't find a joint manufacturer section, and since my issue (rant) is mainly involving Intel mobos (S478) I'll just post here:

My problem is that I've got an OLD XPM2500 (see sig) and I was originally going to upgrade to C2D Penryn Quad... but some financial probs came out of the blue, so I've gotta wait an unforeseeable amount of time... digging around in my parts bin and found a spare P4 2.53C1 Northy (great OC'er). Naively I figured I'd hop on Fleabay and find a former top P4 OC'er mobo, get it relatively cheap, install my CPU and swap out my current mobo.... WRONG!!!!
Upon searching fleabay, I found (not a shock) the prices for these 3 mobos to be OUTLANDISH: IC7-MaxIII, DFI P875b, Asus P4C800-E Dlx — All of which are soaring into the $100s+! Not to mention the scam $30 S/H tack-on fee. I even saw one guy selling an IC7 MIII for $180 starting and $300 buy-it-now!

So the fanboys are at it again on fleabay… I figured I could look to older AMD mobo's for an X2 upgrade since most people I know have abandoned them in favor of C2D.... Right now I'm at a complete loss though: All the research, comparison reviews, I’m just too frustrated to think straight. It just makes me even more PO’d that; used, old, warranty-less hardware is still being up-bid by people that could spend $200-300 more or so, and get a much faster C2D system etc…. So what do I do? I was going to limit myself to a quicky $100 (enough to get a better mobo for this CPU, but not enough to warrant getting something more expensive, yet still below C2D) and rid myself of this slow XP. But apparently zealous bidders won’t allow a decent deal to emerge…

Obviously I’d opt to follow my own advice about $200-300 more, but being that I’d have to get all new mobo, CPU, Ram, HSF, Vid etc…. not going to happen atm. What do I do? Does anyone know someone selling an IC7-Max III for a fair amount?

BTW- I’d ask in the FS/WTB…. BUT I’m still YEARS short of the fscK___ 35 post requirement! :swearing:

I've had both socket P478'S and 462's.
My old XPM-2600 just smoked my old P4 3.0 Northwood in almost everything, not worth the upgrade to 478.
My NF7-S v2 and XPM2600 remain in the closet.

Unfortunately, upgrading to X2 does require DDR2, CPU and mobo, PCI-e card, the cost does jump, but it can be done cheaply (300.+-).

2600 beating a P4 3.0 Northy??? wow I've gotta see that? What do you have it clocked at? I've got my 2500M@2.0/DDR400 w/ Corsair XMS 2-3-3-6. I cannot get this POS to function in windows faster than 2.0, I've tried lowering FSB raising multi, vice versa. Raising the the Latency, nothing works... and the last time I tried playing around XP vomited on me and I had to reinstall. I cannot go through that hassle again. I'm sick of this XP... I can't remember the code on it but it's one of the better steppings too and this ram is top quality. This is just bunk.

IIRC I've tried up to 1.4-1.6 or something around that and it just won't stay stable above 2.0 seriously. I'm not a noob to OC'ing and what not, but this is just baffling, such a disappointment, this chip should do a measly 2.3. And playing around with it just equals XP reinstalls for me. I think it's maybe the 5th restart (etc.) and BOOM XP system files go AWOL and I'm left with a 6hr reinstall/config nightmare. Umm yeah I need to make a ghost image for this haha!

THanks for the pitch, but I've got this spare 2.53C1 here and I'm set on Either the IC7-Max III or C800E-Dlx

well good luck on that.

again i'd personally just sell the old stuff go celeron 420/430.

my celery 420 does a 100% OC on air with ease. $40board + $40chip +$40 RAM = 3.2GHz chip that's 30% faster per clock than a XP and around 70% faster per clock than a P4.

Huh?! You're talking stock XP and stock P4 right? I've never heard of this Cellry chip model before... if you can find the links for these cheap upgrades plz post, I'm hurting here and I really need something a little (20-30%) faster... I'm not going to be able to upgrade for a while it seems... and the upgrade bug has bit me!

Optimally I just want a new P4 mobo what will run this 2.53C1 to ~3ghz.... I'm still finding it hard to believe a 2600M is running circles around a 3.o Northy? bleh I need to zzz, thanks a lot for replying! reps for all!

core uarch, so you get near conroe level performance, but since it's cache crippled it's basically on par clock per clock with K8, but it leaves you the option of dropping in a regular c2d in the future. and FYI it comes with a heatsink, it's a mediocre heatsink(same one used on the new penryn CPUs), but the chip puts out so little heat that for the short term it really doesn't matter and your overclocking isn't really impeded assuming you're willing to settle for around 3Ghz. Heck ask around since any older prescott stock cooler would totally rock this chip as well. also should be like a $10 price cut on it in around a week or so.

as for DDR2 if you need dirt cheep stuff and are looking for real world performance, you can get some OK stuff for $30-40 for 2GB

and I'm going to be blunt. I am now a conroe fan boy, was die hard K8> prescott back in the day and now... well
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ht=celeron+420

if you're using an AGP graphics card... humm
maybe go with an onboard solution for the time being, I'm assuming you're goal is real world performance and you don't need anything flashy...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813185110

conroe clocking is a breeze, basically choose 1:1 with RAM, leave RAM on auto choose FSB maybe up vCore and you're done for the most part. usually 3-3-3 works for around 350FSB for memory timings, and 4-4-4 works well until 450FSB if you're using micron d9 based RAM
http://www.tankguys.com/product_info...6a4b9f2a3f6779

tank guys is pretty good from what I hear. I came from XS and never ehard anythign bad there and over here you guys seem to like him as well so all is good. if you're a newegg only guy...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146565
will likely be single sided and use the new micron d9nhl chip which is double the density of the older stuff and doesn't clock as well. but it's still good stuff.
