I'm Gonna toss in my two cents:

I've been dual booting win XP (32-bit, taking a ram hit) and Xubuntu (64-bit, for full 4GB) for a few months now on my desktop. I would stay in the linux side all the time if it wasnt for gaming. I always find myself back on XP to play CoD 4 (just looks better and runs smoother).

Install is easy: for the ubuntu flavors, pop in the live CD and run install (on the desktop). It will guide you through step by step. When it gets to the partitioning part, pick the "use the whole hard drive - guided" or something like that, and it will set up and partition the HD the way it likes (usually two partitions - one ext3 for all the data, and one for swap space). Couldn't be easier.

Althugh, on the issue of wifi, does your school use 802.1x (aka PEAP, or WPA Enterprise)? If so... setting up the wifi on most *nix systems becomes a pain (In my experience). Although, I wouldnt be surprised if ubuntu 8.04 has better support for it.

Ubuntu is a great for beginner Linux users, and still can preform as well as any other linux system. Apt-get is so easy to use.

I'm not sure on what the school uses. I'm not attending (starting school in the fall) atm, but my iPhone connects to it...if that makes any difference.

If the iPhone connects to it, your golden. My school uses 802.1x, and my iPhone has no hope of connecting to it (unless I set up my own access point - hush hush). Also, getting linux onto it is touchy.

Off topic:
iPhones are awesome!
