And so it begins... (Q6700 build)

Way back in September of '07, right as I finally felt we were making enough money to afford a new PC, the wife and I decided to start following a strict budget and get our finances together. I'm proud of how we've done that but it made it slow going to get my build parts together.

Now, 7 months later, I've got all but the DVD-RW drive (ordering next week) and the new monitor (22" LCD coming next month).

I've got the setup laid out in my sig. For now will run it on my old CRT.

I went with a Q6700 instead of 6600 because I got it for $299.99 from ClubIt. I just thought, "Might as well!"

Can't wait to get it together. Thanks to OCN for providing the awesome For Sale section where I bought a lot of this stuff!

BTW, this is a MASSIVE upgrade for me. Currently have an absolute POS dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows ME

I'm really excited to get some updated games going. My Q6700 came with Quake Wars for free. I'm happy about that because Wolf:ET was one of the few fps games I can play on my current setup and I'm a big fan.

I put it all together last night. I can't load OS until I get my DVD-RW drive next week but it went through POST just fine and BIOS looked good. Was idling a bit hot at 35C but that was with side panels off and cooler just newly installed. Will try again with side panels on this weekend.

I was just going to go buy a DVD drive at Best Buy but I can't bring myself to spend twice as much as I would through NewEgg.

Nice system!!

Btw I just moved my system over to a CM690 (excellent case, especially for the price) and in the process got rid of my 2 IDE dvd drives. I bought the Sony Optaric SATA 20x DVD burner from the egg for $26. Anyway I highly recommend it but in case you want one of them, I have a NEC DVD/RW 16X IDE drive I will give you as a freebie if you want it to get you going. I just flashed the firmware on it to latest and it works like a champ.

Well I've got this thing put together. I'm not posting pics yet because I still have cable management to take care of and I'm going to put some more fans in it. Mainly though I want to get my new 22" monitor before I post pics because this beige 17" CRT is just not doing it for me.

I will post one image though - I know this isn't a big deal or that hard to do but it sure feels good to finally have a system that will show this:

My old system MIGHT have registered a 1 if I could even get it to boot with Vista!

I'm still at stock. Haven't had any time to start OCing yet.
