I feel your pain with all the bloatware Dell puts on their laptops. My XPS M1210 was loaded with so much that I just did a clean install instead of disabling start up programs and uninstalling. I would do that and then see if the problem persists.

If you have legal cd keys and can legally activate windows then you could probably download a copy through a torrent or something without breaking the law......much.

Well, you can always just go back into msconfig and undo everything you did before, then start trying disables one at a time. Or google works.

A clean install is by far the best. That should be SOP for anyone buying a prebuilt computer from anywhere. Who knows what's on there that you -don't- know about, let alone the annoying stuff you do.

No no, you can legally downoad a Windows Vista restore disc, which you can use to reinstall Windows with your valid product key (on a label on the bottom of the laptop somewhere).

I have the link to download the restore disc buried in my bookmarks on my PC at home. I'll post it here later.

First get what ever drivers you need for your laptop on disc or usb stick.
Download gparted and wipe that recovery partition off and expand your hdd.
dban your hdd.
do a fresh install.

My lady has dell inspiron 1300, I did exactly that.

If you can't get in at all, you can always use a Linux Live CD and boot from it. Download your... erm... OS of choice... and then load it back on.

Or maybe you could do the above and find out you like Linux...

Just a thought.
