AMD has finally launched the B3-step Phenom processors today with quad-core Phenom X4 9850, 9750, 9650, 9550 and 9100e as well as tri-core Phenom X3 8600 and 8400. The highest speed Phenom X4 9850 at 2.5GHz will only cost $235 while the lowest speed Phenom X4 9100e at 1.8GHz costs $199 while the rest of the X4 SKUs lie between the price range. In comparison, X4 9850 will compete against Core 2 Quad Q9300 and Q6600 both priced at $266. And after the Intel's price cut on 20th April, the 9850 will compete against the Q6700 has its price cut from $530 to $266 while Q6600 is lowered to $224. Phenom X3 will take aim at Intel Core 2 Duo family since Intel has no tri-core offerings yet so X3 8600 and 8400 at $175 and $149 respectively will compete directly with E8400 and E8200 at $183 and $163 respectively.

...Phenoms competing with Q6600's? They're good chips and all, but that's like saying my truck is able to stay with a standard Corvette...possible, but highly unlikely!

...Tho both being the case would pwn so much

Again, what the hell is the difference between the 8190 and the 8200, the specs
are exactly the same AFAIK.

They look same but the 8190 doesn't support Virtualization and Trusted Execution Technology, which most end users won't care.

Then why would they even market this chip, if the difference is so small
and ambiguous, especially for 90%+ users.

And rep+ for good info.

How would you fold with a tri-core? Great read.

The majority of people who buy these things, have no idea what Virtualization and Trusted Execution Technology, is. So they see the price difference, and the same clock speeds, and then see that and immediately think it must be better.

I would think great for a computer that is used a lot.
Set SMP on 2 cores and most everything else could run on the 3rd core without disturbing the SMP.
Not sure how programs would handle that though.
