I'd say that a combination of extremely slow memory running single channel, a single core Netburst processor, and Vista Ultimate is the problem.

1. Old Pentium "netburst" architecture is about 50% as fast per clock cycle as a single core processor set up Core2. 25% as fast as a dual core in a multithreaded app like 3dMark. So you're running below 1 Ghz in terms of work performed relative to an Allendale Dual Core.
2. THEN you take into account that your memory is running single channel because it's unmatched; so that slow processor is having to wait for returns from the frontside bus more than it would like to. Call it another 25% performance loss relative to our stereotyped Allendale DDR2 800 system.
3. Now require that system to run Vista Ultimate. Say Vista would take 10% of the system resources of our stereotyped Allendale rig just on background processes and GUI. It will probably take 50% (or more!) of the resources of your system, leaving only half of what's left for poor 3dMark.

So you have an effective 1 Ghz Core2-equivalent system losing 25% of it's speed to memory issues and 50% of what's left to Vista. In our simplified example, that leaves about 375 mhz worth of Core 2 equivalent clock cycles to run 3dMark.

I'm shocked you got a 5000. That 8800GT -dragged- your system to that score. Kicking and screaming.

lol, i get the same 3dmark score in XP or vista, so i wouldn't go as far as to say vista ruins your performance by 50%, but i can see how his slower computer could be effected that much due to hardware limitations, etc.

Honestly, to get about 11-13k points in 3dmark all he has to do is get a DFI bloodiron p-35 and an e2160. My e2140 has seen 3557mhz but wont go higher due to a fsb wall, so with that x9 multi he could get a better overclock.

1)either a gigabyte ds3L($90) or dfi bloodiron(about $120)

2)E2160($70) or maybe a quad core if you can spent $250

EDIT: some good ddr2 800 can be had for really cheap now. 4gb of ddr2 800 runs for under $100 if you know what your doing

I see you are a XP fanboy.
whit XP SP2 i got 4996, whit Vista ultimate i got 4785, whit SP1 for Vista i got 5500!
so vista is better than XP!

Vista requires more system resources. If you run an optimized (Read: shut down mass quantities of background junk) Vista, sure it will beat a copy of XP you never ran msconfig on. But Vista does more, has more features, and therefore uses more memory and system cycles for its own purposes.

Now, in 3DMark, it's possible Vista would run better if there are better drivers, etc. But it uses more resources. That's not fanboyism, it's just a fact.

Is your P4 OC'ed at all? That would make a difference and would give your gpu some room to breath but I wouldn't expect to much. I know this is an intel thread but I had a single core amd 3200+ OC'ed to 2.65 with sli'd 8800gts's (g80) also OC'ed and I only got around 8700 in 3dmark06. Honestly that score does sound about right.

Yeah, when I look at your system specs I think, "Why in the hell would you build a nice quadcore system and put an x1650 in" lol.
