Overclocking issues HELP!

Thread Starter
Im very new to this overclocking thing but I wanted to see what all the hype was about to I said what the heck and overclocked totally unprepared luckily things went smoothly

I'm running a q6600 with a gigabyte DS3L @ 3Ghz

My temps idle are 34 31 34 31

At load they are 55 54 55 53

Now when I overclocked I based my setting on this picture I found

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2245/...5f4375a8_o.jpg

and this thread

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...l-overclocking

Only difference in mine is the multiplier is a 9x, FSB 333, my memory multiplier is at 2.40 giving me 800 and 800, and the bottom settings are Manuel, everything normal except the Vcore which I have at 1.27

I ran it on Prime95 for around 8 hours seems fine

Now my questions are

1) My computer seems to be running slower than before the overclock especially the load times Firefox before took around 1 second to load up now it takes maybe 3 also the overall start up time of the computer seems slower now as well. Another side effect I've noticed is weird mouse movements like for example I'll just be browsing the internet and my mouse will freeze for only a tiny millisecond but it's still noticeable

Any ideas? Wrong Settings?

2) Is my ram overclocked ? Which setting in the picture is to oveclock the memory ? Like I said I'm new at this and I rushed through this I've done some research but on most of the topics I don't really understand due to terms that I'm not in knowledge with

3) Will me going higher say 3.4Ghz with 1.4 Vcore shorten my processors lifespan by a noticeable amount? Is it stable because I do alot of Audio production and it would hurt for my computer to crash every now and then

Thanks in advance

bump up your memory multi to 2.5, that will o/c your ram some more. depending on your chip, you should be able to get to 3.4, it will probably shorten your lifespan from 10 years, to 8, something like that. if you haven't already, download and run coretemp. post back with your VID, thats your stock vcore. that will give us an idea how high your chip will go with deccent temps.

i think the stuttering is because you need more vcore

bump up the nb volts a bit too

i got 1.32v on my e6600 @ 425x8

what are the timings on your memory? if they are 4-4-4-12 or something drop them to 5-5-5-15 and clock those ****s at 1066

you should be able to o/c to 1066, but i believe 800 is the default. if you look in my sig, i have Gskill. if i want 1066 i have to o/c it to that speed. right now i have my memory muliplyer at 2.0(i think) my memory is at 950, cpu is at 3.42.

How much Vcore do you have on your 3.4...are there any other settings I should change

I just overclocked to 3.4 with 1.4 and I'm currently Testing it with Prime95

About the memory my multiplier is at 2 like yours but I get 756 is it fine if I increase the multiplier and it goes over

yeah, thats fine, your ram is underclocked right now. its probably the most stable. get your cpu stable, then go back and change the memory multiplier to 2.4 or 2.5. you can test your ram by using memtest. the best way to get a stable o/c is to o/c one component at a time. so now, work on the cpu, get the highest, stable o/c with that. once your done with that, then you can start tweeking the ram settings. oh, another way to test your complete system is to run the blend test on prime.

edit: i have my vcore set at 1.4v, my vid is 1.2250v. dont be affraid to bump up the vcore to get it stable. you may need to go up to 1.425v, but you should be fine at 1.4v.

Start from lower than 1.4 and work your way up till you are stable.
