I found that on my Diamond 3870 the fan noise increase from 25% to 55% was nearly unnoticeable but it cooled much better. After about 55% is started getting quite loud.

SyncMaster753,

I don't believe my case temps were the problem. My case is a Antec Plus View II,... its quite big. Like a mini server case, lots of air inside and well ventilated. At the back it has a 120mm exhaust fan. Sure, its not running at 100% fan speed. But its enough to suck in cool and expel warm (rarely hot) air out of the system.

And yes, it was a bizzare problem I was experiencing. So far I'm the only instance I've heard the problem with :S
