As far as actual overclocking, the chip is great. I've seen people getting over 5GHz on more "extreme" cooling, but on this site you'll find members going over 4GHz on water cooling. For quads in general, there isn't much software to take advantage of them, so they are primarily an enthusiast's chip, unless you encode video or play the odd RTS game that actually will use it.

Your going to get majority of those on overclock.net telling you to go for the Q6600, seeing as how the Q9450 is finally out give it a few days wait and see what the results are with it.

Or you could just throw caution to the wind and blow the extra $170 like me

It is hard to say. It depends on your cooling, what FSB your mobo can hit, and the chip lottery.

I would lean towards Q6600.
