Need Some Info on Power Supplies

Hey how you doin'?

Im buying an Nvidia 8800GT 512MB for $280 on the weekend. Now, ive heard that some power suplies cant power it, or are put under stress from it. Also, ive heard that the performance of the card will be hampered by a low quality power supply. This is what is read on my "SunPro 550W ATX" Power Supply:

+5v - 38A
+3.3v - 28A
+12v - 17A
-12v - 0.8A
+5vSB - 2A
-5v - 0.5A
Grey - Power OK
Black - GND

I rang up the people i bought it from and they said go for a something like a CollerMaster 430W PSU since it has enough on the 12V rail. They also said that if i try with the SunPro PSU i might get the message saying there isnt enough power and i might not get full frame rates.

Can someone please xplain this for me! This has been going on too long for me and im buying the graphics card 2morrow for god's sake!!

Even if there could be a tiny bit of instability with the generic SunPro PSU, please tell me since i dont want to damage my system or get lower frames

Thanks guys

It might even kill your pc. .

Are you currently running your system stable with that 9600gt/sunpro on your sig? Either way if you have the 9600gt its not worth buying a 8800gt then, the difference isnt worth it in this situation.

I think even the 9600gt might be too much for your current PSU from the looks of your specs, but im no PSU expert.

If you are looking for a new PSU i would suggest this Corsair 550VX

It would run both the 9600gt and the 8800gt just fine, plus its a great PSU that wont really break the bank.

EDIT: Looks like Newegg wont work for you since you are in australia. I would still recommend that PSU, although im not sure how the pricing is over there. looking at the 8800gt you found it seems that everything is more expensive oer in that side of the world .

You 550w psu has 17amps on the 12v
8800GT should have 450w and 26amps.

Here's a 450w@33amps for $60 (after rebate) Corsair 450VX

U really need to stop talkin to them if they tell u... an underpowered power supply "may not get full frame rates"

an underpowered power supply can kill ur entire system by undervolting..

now if u really have a 9600gt

then its not an upgrade to a 8800gt..

but if you are confusing ATI 9600s to nvideas 9600s then its a total different story..

to be sure what video card you have goto this topic and download GPU-z. its archived at our downloads section and it safe to use.

post a screen shot back here if you cant figure it out and we will help you figure it out.

If your talking about Cooler Master some are good and some not. I don't see a 430 over here so I would be cautious.
