5600+ resetting to stock under load

Hi all

First I'm glad to have joined this community. Lot of good info here.

Second, My issue is that I'm running a 5600+ @ 3.1ghz and staying around 50c temps. I can hold this speed just fine until I try to load a game. Once the game loads, my CPU's settings all revert to stock (according to CPU-Z). Voltage, multiplier and frequency all go back to +/- stock settings. I have AMD's Cool'N'Quiet disabled in my M2N32-SLI motherboard's BIOS, so I'm not sure what is causing this. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance!

Zip, welcome to OCN!

When this problem occurs, what game are you playing? Does this happen in all the games that you play? Did you overclock through the BIOS or by using AMD Overdrives tool?

Good luck

Certainly, I will as soon as I'm back in front of that particular desktop tonight.

Lord of the Rings Online. I did not have the same issue with Eve Online (new DX9 client). I will need to test with some more games. I'll put Crysis in tonight...if any game will stress my system, it'll be Crysis, hahaha. I should note that I'm playing LOTRO using the DX10 features, I will be doing the same with Crysis.

BIOS only. I am not familiar with AMD's Overdrive software...doesn't sound like something I'd want to use. In fact, the whole reason I OC from BIOS is to avoid odd issues like this one.

Very good question. I'm using the new 1802 BIOS. I am wondering if Asus screwed up yet another BIOS. Perhaps Cool'n'Quiet being the borked perameter this time.

Zipdigital, if it is game specific then this is the oddest issue I have ever run into. Test other games and let us know how it goes.

Good luck

Good to hear. I've been worried about it.

I'll test with some other games tonight. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the help.

If it is just Lotro, then I can bring it up to Turbine...if it's not, I have no clue what's going on or how to fix it. I'm willing to bet it'll be all games...

My issue seems to have escalated. I was not able to start up and remain stable, so I went back into my bios to play with frequencies and voltages.

For starters I have my CPU<-->MCP55 HT Speed at 4X and my NB<-->SB speed at 4X.

My CPU Multiplier is at 12X and my CPU Frequency is at 242.0mhz. If I multiply 242 by 12, I -should- get 2904...a conservative speed for the 5600+. However my CPU tab in the BIOS says I'm at 3388mhz.

Currently I can't start into windows, which is understandable because I'd need some more voltage to be running 3.3ghz...but I don't understand why I'm at 3.2 when I shouldn't even have hit 3 yet. The math doesn't scale correctly either, because if I drop to 239mhz on the frequency, my CPU is at 2868mhz. 240mhz puts me at 3346mhz.

Is anyone else running a M2n32-SLI with the 1802 BIOS? If so, can you confirm the odd numbers? Have I misunderstood one of the HT multipliers? I'm stumped.

I've tried a couple of other multipliers and frequencies that should be keeping me in the 2.9 to 3.0 ghz range, and it's still wildly scaled when I get near the 3ghz range. Lower than that and the math comes out as it should, but as soon as I get near 3 ghz, it's like the multiplier goes nuts. I'm certainly missing something, I hope one of you guys can point it out and set me straight.
