How come we're still at 2.0+ Ghz?

I see that Intel keeps shrinking and shrinking their processors but they're still in the 2.0 Ghz range...I begin to ask myself why is that?

Is it simply because the cycles per second are irrelevant in this day and age?

I know that a 2.13Ghz E6400 is obviously faster than a 3.0Ghz Pentium4 for various reasons but with new advances in technology how come these processor's aren't climbing in Hertz at all?

Anyone here who's more educated than I?

Clock Cycles, improved efficiency, more transistors on the die, larger L2 caches and improved and added instruction sets. Clock frequency is irrelevant.....

I just had to explain this to someone in my office just 20 minutes ago.


They got so bent around the axle about why a current 2 Ghz processor is faster than an older 3 Ghz processor.

yep, been debating this over at the nvidia forums, why more cores are better than high frequency.

ie: my e4300 at 3240 cant keep up with my q6600 at 3150 in any way shape or form.

why? more ability to do the math, its really that simple C2D share cache C2Q dont which essentually make them true dual cores ie v1.0: 2 c2d 1 chip

Because speed isn't everything. If they can improve performance at the same clock speeds, there is no need for faster. Even though the dies keep getting smaller, the tolerances drop as well. The new CPU's are not as hearty as the older ones.

No... Clock frequenct is NOT irrelevant. Would you run a 300MHz Core 2 Duo?

Current transistor and processes limit how fast CPU can clock. Designers continue to still improve the CPU via other means. For example, CPUs guess what data via path prediction to reduce latency.

It would seem a limit to clock cycles per second has been reached.. I think I've seen as high as 6ghz on youTube, but manufactures can't very well release 6ghz chips that need liquid nitrogen for cooling!!! Smaller fab processes are allowing for some improvments though thanks to the reduction in heat.

I imagine a big reason for singles cores running so easily at 3.0+ ghz is that one core puts off a lot less heat than 4! Therefore a quad core with the same fab process as a single core must be clocked back to avoid overheating and stability problems.

An example of this difference would be the FX-74 which has two x2 processors on one board running 3.0ghz . Where a Phenom has yet to see 3.0ghz, infact 2.3ghz is the best stock speed I have seen.

Isn't it the opposite to that?

The cycles per second are relevant, that is why clock speeds are not that important anymore.

If you are getting more cycles per second you don't need as much frequency. Or am i just talking bull?
