C'mon you know what he meant. He was just saying 6ghz isn't important anymore if you have a 3Ghz processor doing more operations per clock that actually beats a 5Ghz processor.

You knew what he meant, you was just trying to start a debate

Obivously clocks still matter if they are using the same architecture.

There is no operations per clock.... MHz never was everything. It was and is just a number for the masses. Intel and AMD just now no longer market GHz/MHz since they are hitting the wall with current technology.

With the increase of cores, cache, efficiency mhz arnt as neccessary as they were in the single core P4 days.

They still matter, but the performance of chip 1 vs chip 2 wont necessarily rely on clock speed alone.

Look up "Moors law" and "law of diminishing returns"

Current copper pathways , and as Duckie states transistors ,cannot
exceed certain thresholds, we have almost met these thresholds currently
which is why DARPA has spend like 50 million to SUN to develop new laser
conducter paths. Transisters are already so small they are still figuring out
how to work with them as efficiently as possible but are limited by the conducters.

The other point is architechture optimization, not unlike car engines , same principle
of mechanics as always but newer smaller engines can produce more hp in less space
than engines of 20 yrs ago , due to optimizing how the parts work with each other.
CPU's follow suit as would any technology.

And that is the truth, comes down to 2 things these days, what a chip can do per cycle, and the number of cycles per second. One can be more important than the other depending on OS, and software used. These days operations per clock is taking the cake as clocks per second has hit a wall ~3.0ghz+ some for the OC'ers.

Clock speed is only one factor, but still important. Get a 45nm quad-core to run 10Ghz and you'd notice a difference .
