790fx vs 780a

Thread Starter
I have decided that my next CPU is going to be a Phenom x4 9850 Black Edition. The problem is, my current motherboard will not get a BIOS update to support Phenom (I have emailed Gigabyte about this). I was wondering weather to get an AMD 790FX board or an nForce 780a board (These have yet to be released). I plan on moving up to a 22" monitor sometime soon, and I would like to keep SLI a possibility with my 8800GT. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If you haven't yet got you a new MB I would get the Gigabyte AMD 790FX board.

Although I have yet to see the possibilities of a 780a board, I still think a 790FX would suit the Phenom better.

For a good High-end/Good Price 790FX board you should check out the DFI Lanparty M2RS:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136044

Does away with the gimmicks and gives you a good, straight OC board with TRI-Crossfire potential. Im not sure how attached you are to Nvidia, but 3 3870's would be one mean setup.

Plus, the DFI supports fraction multiplier control, which to my knowledge no other AM2+ board can do.

(Fraction Multi: 12.7, 6.8, 9.56, etc).

so would the DFI be better than an MSI K9A2 Platinum??

if your gonna sli i would wait for a nvidia board. i've been wanting to buy a new motherboard that is full AM2+ also. but i want to run sli or at least have the option to do it. i'd wait out until the AM2+ SLi boards come out.
it's eh...

I have two 8800 GTX and waiting impatiently for the MSI K9N2 Diamond <780a chipset> to come out so that I may add on a 3rd card. I'm also considering the MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum <750a chipset> for my roomate's new board. MSI makes these nice 700 series gaming boards.

The Asus M3A32-MVP is an excellent board.... has numerous overclocking options... i was able to push my Phenom 9850 to 3.2Ghz (1.55V, stable).... having good cooling and DDR2 1066 modules will help overclocking a lot....

In a word, Yes.

From what I have seen from reviews, the K9A2 doesnt have the full complement of BIOS options that Phenoms benefit from.

The DFI has these. The M3A32-MVP, as mentioned above, is also a very good OC board. The BIOS options are very good in terms of getting the most from phenoms.

Considering he already has an 8800GT and a pair of 8800GT in SLI is faster than a pair of 3870 in crossfire, its a moot point. Sure 3 3870 are potentially faster but the cost may be a factor.

The 790 SLI boards are equally capable from an overclocking perspective.
