8800GTS SLI 640mb-320mb?

post #1 of 9

I heard once when the 8-series came out that though both the 640MB and the 320MB were G(80) cards they would be able to run in sli even though the memory difference. Though I chose to not believe the statement above, Is this possible?

It's possible, but you're going to have to change the registry values...look here

My brother did the same thing with his EVGA 320 and 640...there are some issues, I think...but it is possible!

yes, but there is no real benefit, since the 640MB card will act like a 320MB card (i.e., only 320MB will be used). You'd have to use coolbits to make this happen also.

Dude why are you going for the 8800gts? Get the 8800gt dude. YOu get more value for your hard-earned dollar. Don't waste your money on 8800gts or even 8800gtx they are just crap. You get two 8800gt and you will noticed a significant boost in performance.

even tom's hardware admitted

It even beats the 8800gtx.

QFT. People who are going to spend 600USD on the GX2 are really aren't getting value for their money. 8800gt is Imho the best card that NVIDIA have made so far. Really the GX2 is over-priced and doesn't provide much of a performance boost of what I expect. I expected it to run Crysis maxed on 100fps.

I would have thought to have get the 8800gt dude. Its cheaper and is only slightly less powerful than the 8800gts(g92)

This is not recommended, so it would be better if you could consider the answer as a “no”, but it is possible using CoolBits. Though at the end of the day, if you currently own an 8800GTS 640MB you should purchase a second 8800GTS 640MB. However, when using CoolBits (value set to 18), you can force both of the cards to use the lower of the two memory sizes and operate together in SLi mode. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes. So an 8800GTS 640MB paired with an 8800GTS 320MB would operate the same as 8800GTS 320MB SLi.

Enableing CoolBits;

Step 1.Click on your Start Menu in the Windows Task Bar and select Run. When the command box opens, type "regedit" (without the quotes) and press OK. With the registry editor open, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE NVIDIA Corporation Global NVTweak (expand the menu using the "+" expansion buttons to locate this menu item). Click on "NVTweak" in the menu. Next, right-click on the empty space inside right window and choose "New>DWORD value". Name the value "Coolbits" (without the quotes).

Step 2.Within the Registry Editor, right click on Coolbits and choose Modify. Change the Value data to "18" (without the quotes) and click OK. Exit the Registry Editor.
