Ballistix Issues

Thread Starter
Well.. about a month ago, my PC wouldn't boot, so I took my RAM out, and it would boot with 1 stick, but not the other. Both in the same slot, the first one.

I bought a new kit of Ballistix that has been fine for the past month, but today I was blue-screening like nuts... so I ran MemTest, and got 100's of errors.

So, I figured that I still had 1 good stick from the first kit I bought, so I went ahead to stick that one in. I didnt know which one it was so I had to try each one. The first one booted, so I figured it was the good one, but my PC would just freeze after the Windows loading bar screen. So, I popped in the other stick in the same slot, and same thing... freezed after the loading bar. But, both sticks worked... before, my PC wouldnt even boot with one of the sticks... now it boots with both, but just freezes.

I haven't figured out the status of the new set yet.. as in I dont know if both sticks or just 1 are bad... but now I cant get my PC to boot with any sticks.

I just cant figure it out, but all I could think of is some kind of motherboard issue... is that possible?

Now heres what I find really wierd... I put all 4 sticks in just for laughs, and it would actually boot... in safe mode. So, I ran MemTest, and it got no errors.

How could this be possible when 1 stick is supposed to be dead and the new set got 100's of errors? I know for sure one of the sticks in there is good, but all of a sudden they all are working? What would cause that?

I think there is something wrong w/ both the ram and your board.
Had that problem before w/ my DFI. The ram controller was broken so i think it took my cellshock and balistix w/ it. When i ran memtest86 i got tons of errors and windows would freeze up.

btw did you run the newest memtest86?

there is a new one. just burn the .iso to a cd and boot from it.

But, I got errors... now they are gone. My PC runs fine. All 4GB installed, with 1 stick that should be dead, and 2 that should get errors... yet nothing.

I am running the Memtest within Windows. I also have run the Windows Memory testing utility if that is anything good... no errors there either.

Well I thought I had the problem fixed, but last night it started crashing again... now I ran Memtest and it gave me errors again. So, I turned it off and left it all night, and now it booted up fine, and no errors in Memtest.

Now, that there leads me to believe its not the RAM, because it cant just not work than work. Would this be a correct assumption on my part? Could it be possible that it is overheating then getting errors, or should I look into a motherboard issue?

Your RAM is failing due to temps from extended running conditions. Chances are it will die or fail 100% very soon. It has happened to me several times now..all with Crucial Ballistix.

I am currently waiting on my 4rth RMA for a 2gb set of 1066 Ballistix. [btw, i never exceeded 2.26v on any of the sticks that failed.]

either that or perhaps not enough volts.. 2.2-2.3 is what you should have for them, but watch the temps.

Yeah, my voltage is at 2.175, but vdimm voltage is like 0.025 higher with the IP-35 Pro, so its about where it should be. I do leave my computer on folding 24/7, so I suppose thats whats causing this.

CL3P20, so you think it is heat issues? Why is it that it works perfectly sometimes and doesn't work at all other times? So should I still worry about my board, or do you think its all heat related?
