EDIT: help with $600 build please!

This is for a friend who doesn't need a gaming GPU, but something decent to run vista. No monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers needed. ~$600 MAX. He wants a small form factor case.

See attached image:

$541 grand total including OS and shipping

Whoops, that image of the burner should be a SATA.

Build looks great- but you might want to reconsider the 8600gt. You can spend ~40$ more for a 8800gs right now and get much better performance. The 8600 is kind of horrible.

I think it looks good. He dont need much GPU power to run vista. Maybe a 8500GT or 7300GS
post #5 of 20
Didn't even notice that lol. If you don't need to game at all you could get by easily with integrated graphics. I know the AMD 690 chipset would run vista no problem, but not sure about intel. You could replace the cpu and mobo with those if you want to save a few(~60) dollars.

hmmm... the video card can be ANYTHING as long as it runs vista smoothly. I know nothing about ATI... how about the HD 2400 or HD 2600 series? He really doesn't need anything to game, so no 8800, 9600, or 3850. Maybe i could get him to reconsider, but lets stick to the original plan for now.

If he is not using it for anything powerful (ie gaming, programming, CAD, video rendering, etc) you can skimp a whole lot on the HDD. Before I started gaming, I never even filled my 40 GB IDE HDD.

Also, if the above isn't true and he doesn't NEED Vista, he could easily live off a Celeron D processor.

You know what? If he's just using it for things like writing papers and surfing the web, just get him Ubuntu and save him $200.

Negative on the AMD. I know it would save some money, but I gave into Intel's Dual-Core legendary OC'ing.

How about a 2600PRO 256MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102103 and saving $25?

One thing he mentioned was at least 200GB on the storage side. Sorry I forgot to mention

I'm sure there is an intel mobo with powerful enough integrated graphics to run vista. That would save a fair amount of money.
