Looking for a cheap quiet/passive GPU cooler...

Thread Starter
I tried to get information on this but I couldn't find any. I am researching my next build and I want to build a silent or near silent computer. So I either want a new vga that is quiet ( I don't know what size fan I would need and what CFM is good for a vga fan) or I want to buy a heatsink for <$20. Any ideas? OC'ing isn't a concern... Not sure if I will do 9800 or 4870...

well the new Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 & S2 are geared towards passive application, but they perform markedly better when paired with a separate fan or the "turbo" dual fan module they sell.

another one to look at is the Thermalright HR-03, but it's rather expensive

the S1 is for higher-end models and has extra heatpipes (read more expensive lol) while the S2 is geared towards older cards

edit--------------
linky
i'll add purchase links when i figure out which place actually has them in stock

edit2--------------
performance-pc's has them in
Newegg seems to only have the S2 in

edit3---------------
finally found the S1 over at Ewiz

we've got a guide in the ATI and NVIDIA cooling subforums about what to use to clean, What products are safe to clean AS5 from my CPU/Heatsink?

it's just a matter of undoing the screws on the existing heatsink and cleaning it all off with something mentioned above but most often just use 91%+ isopropyl alcohol.
as for cooler installation it varies from cooler to cooler.

edit-----------
good luck on getting your PC setup ^_^ b

I have an S1 r2 on my 8800GTS g92. It's much quieter than the stock fan and I haven't really checked temps, but I can't imagine it's any hotter... in fact I zip tied a Yate Loon 120mm fan on it and I'm sure it's much cooler now as well as being quieter!

the only downside is the cooler stick out far enough that I had to take the fan off my side panel, but no worries there.

edit: just checked temps and gpu is idling at 31 degrees and pcb registers at 29 degrees according to gpu-z
