BSOD during OS install. =[

Thread Starter
Well I just built my first rig, so I'm guessing I messed something up hardware wise. But post runs fine, after I disabled the fdd. Before I changed my boot sequence, it ran an nvidia boot agent and said media test failure, but I change the boot seq too cd rom to boot the OS. So during installation I randomly get a bsod. Help please haha.

That happened to me once... and it was because of my RAM. Either the timings were all wacked or the speed was wrong. Try to manually set you RAM to stock settings and see if that helps.

Look at the package your RAM came with. It might be on a label somewhere... or just google your memory. Type in something along the lines of this "GSkill DDR2 800 timings" or whatever your RAM is rated at.

Also check for what voltage your RAM should be at.

One more thing I just thought of. Try pulling out a stick of your RAM (if you have 2x2GB sticks) because Vista won't recognize the 4GB's you have and it will mess up your install. Leave 2GB's in, install and download all the updates. I will try to find the exact update you need to fix the 4GB issue. For now, try just leaving 2GB on your mobo.

EDIT... Here's the update thread
EDIT #2... I'm at work so I can't see the pic, so hopefully someone else can interpret it

According to Microsoft, only 5-20% of these errors are actually caused by the OS. Only 10% are hardware related. The other 70% are the result of faulty drivers or software incompatibility. Based on those numbers, less than 15% of blue screen errors can be permanently resolved with an OS reinstall.
I bet you this issue is a hardware issue. Just run memtest to see if you get any errors. If not, and you still get the BSOD. Run stock speeds on your hardware. If the same problem, try a different windows CD (any really) to see if you get the same problem. If none of these work... GET linux

I second this, i had this problem, but I could install vista with 2gb and then when you install all your updates, throw that other stick in and then you have 4gb with vista!

So far its going good. Install progress is farther than it has gotten before.
Might be off-topic, but what should my CPU be idling at? I think I messed up my heat sink installation. Also, my fan is spinning hella slow.
