Please Advise on Upcoming Build: Quad + DDR2 or DDR3 + SLi

After reading the title I appreciate you guys still clicking in. I know what it's like to see these threads every week but I really can't decide on a course of action. I decided to wait on upgrading until the 790 stuff got around.. Now that it has I still can't decide. I don't really want to spend DDR3 money on a PC right now but I don't want to cut myself short. Here's my baseline build:

Quad Core
4GB of good OC Ram
DFI or equivalent OC capable SLi motherboard
2nd eVGA 880GTS 512mb for SLi

I'll be reusing my current builds case, psu, hdds, gpu, and sound card. I dual boot XP Pro x64 and Vista Ultimate x64.

I've been looking at a budget Q6600 setup and I know it's hard to beat but the new stuff (Q9450) isn't bad either. I plan to OC on air with either a Thermalright SI-128SE or IFX-14 if I can fit it. The Q9450 multi doesn't really concern me as the price difference is just to great to the next step. I'd like to be able to upgrade this system if need be but DDR3 is just too expensive IMO at 4GB a time.

Thanks for taking the time to read this thread, and thanks in advance for any advice contributed. I like to take pictures so I plan on updating this thread as I move forward.

Thanks again!

Go for Corsair Dominators 1066MHz, $100 for 4GB right now at Newegg. The Q6600 is a better buy than a Q9450, and a proven overclocker. For motherboard, the EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 is a great board, but not a "budget board - you're going to pay more for 780i.

Thanks for the quick reply! While I agree the Q6600 is a great buy and a proven OC beast.. The Q9450 really caught my eye.. Between chipset and CPU I am just at a loss.

I've never had a bad experience with Corsair but I've read some bad things lately. In short I've been looking for a good set of 2GBx2 so that I can go 8GB if I choose later on. Something 4/4/4/12+, CL4, and as close or under 2.0V as I can get. I've always had great luck with Mushkin RAM and DFI motherboards on my AMD builds but then again this is an Intel build.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2508081&name=4

As for the motherboard that's exactly the one I was looking into but it didn't perform very well in the reviews I found.. even when compared to a ref board. DFI has been very good to me lately but I guess I need to break out of my box.DAMN is that eVGA sexy. I may have to add a window if I get one of those. As for going 780i, I'd just like to make sure it's stable.. I've read enough NV chipset horror stories over the last few weeks.

FYI - Budget isn't really an issue, I'd just like to keep things realistic.

Hi,

I had the same delemma when i started to look for hardware for my
new rig. It was between DDR2 or 3.

I decided to go for 2Gb XMS3 Corsair ram. Alot of the reviews and stuf i read made valid
points of there not being to great of a difrence between 2gb of ddr2 or 4gb.
So i decided to go for the XMS3 2Gb PC10666. Its not top of the range ram, but it is fast, and u can get it for $130.(DDR3 is suppose to be 200% + faster than DDR2)

Another point, is prices will drop for DDR3. And i dont think to long from now as well. So it is the new tech coming in. So, i decided to go for the new hardware.

Hope it helps.

I suggest this for gaming graphics performance on a reasonably high but not silly budget:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813141005
--->Motherboard with SLI capability and 3 PCIEx16 slots.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018
---> 65nm Quad Core at a great price. Yes, the Q9450 is better. No, not $150 better.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227199
--->Nice DDR2800 2x2 kit, not too expensive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130337
--->1-2 more of these babies. MMM SLI.

Ok so DDR2 is a go, Q6600 is a go, and the eVGA 780i SLI is a lock. My only issue now is deciding on a set of 1000 or 1066 ram. The DDR2800 stuff is about the same price as the 1000 sticks from Mushkin and G.Skill. I remember reading something about a 800 2GBx2 set from G.Skill that was exactly the same as a 1066 set they sell but I couldn't find it again. In the end Mushkin has always been good to me so I'll probably end up with a set of Redline PC2-8000s (996593).

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache | 234.99
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018

Mushkin XP2 8000 Redline 2 x 2GB (5-5-5-12 @ 2.0-2.1V) | 119.99 or 122.60
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146755
- http://www.mushkin.com/doc/products/...ail.asp?id=647

EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI | 259.99
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188024

I think I'm going to wait for the Q6600 to drop in price again, I just missed it for $180-190 for the second time . Then add in a Thermalright SI-128 SE, new Scythe 120mm Fan, and eventually another eVGA 8800GTS 512mb and I'm done again for a little while. Thoughts?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FYI for anyone in a similar situation: DDR3 just isn't worth it yet.. In short, a DDR3 system would be almost 2x more expensive!

CPU: Q9450 (8x Multi) 359.99 / RAM: DDR3 2GBx2 400+ / MOBO: 790i 349.99

The DDR2 upgrade is about $600.. The DDR3 upgrade is about $1100!

Well I'm glad I held off a bit, things changed over the last few days. I've decided on a transitional setup:

Intel Q9450 | 299.99
- http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0286543

eVGA 750i SLi FTW | 189.99
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...6813188026&Tpk

Mushkin 4GB Redline DDR2 1000 | 119.99
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146755

The way I figure it, I've got the 45nm CPU, I've got 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and when you consider the price per perf of the mobo and RAM it's a winning setup for now. In time as DDR3 comes down in price and timings I'm sure I'll make the switch. For now though, I'm sure I'll be happy with an Intel Quad OC'd on air with 4GB, and a set of 8800GTS 512s in SLi.

Now my only concern is if my DA750 has enough for my upcoming build.

you get the best bang for the buck if you stick to the mainstream of the memory market, which currently is still DDR2-800 or 1066, preferably at low latencies. DDR3-1066 and -1333 memory do not yet result in better performance, and so should only be considered by hardcore enthusiasts, who aim for maximum overclocking performance knowing that they will get little benefit for spending a fortune.

Arent you worried about locking yourself down to PCI-E 1.1? I am in the same process as you and not going with a PCI-E 2.0 mobo I think would greatly hinder longevity.

Ok and while I have taken that into consideration I'd rather not have any regrets .. The Muhskin Redline utilize Micron D9GMH ICs, and I've had some very good luck with D9 ICs in other builds. I have looked at the HP2s but I just can't pull the trigger on them since one revision was great and the other couldn't cut it. What I will say about the HP2s is that they have a sick price (47.99 after MIR | http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146731).

Longevity isn't a real concern for me right now, I do plan on going DDR3 eventually.. Also, this board is PCIe 2.0..?
