hmm.... this is making a lot of sense. Since I am thinking about updating the CPU later, 5000+ BE with its current pricing and slightly lesser performance is a more feasible choice...

Thanking, thinking, thinking....

I am not a big fan to Crysis but AOE is also heavy on graphic... I don't know if I game hard or not but I do game on daily bases.

The new rig is for several purposes:
1. HTPC
2. Gaming machine
3. Graphic/ Video editing

And it also have to be...
a) Easy to upgrade
b) Able to go with software advancing for at least within 2 years of use
c) Ideally can fit into a cube box (which means, good heat consumption and space saving design
d) And most importantly... not breaking my bank account

I would go for the 5000+ BE, or a 6000+ for that matter over the 6400+ because its safe to say you can hit 3ghz on the 5000+. And the 6000+ you could overclock the extra 200mhz to the 6400+ range.

One more update...

With the saving on CPU, I've decided to add in another 4G of RAM. I have asked a friend to make the purchase for me since the $30 rebate is limited by one per household.

The final pricing for phase one is now:

Newegg: $612.19 ($552.19 after MIR)
eWiz:$144.12 (including shipping and silver compound)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Total: $ 856.31

adding in another 4gb of ram? so 8gb of ram total. You do know that only x64 bit OS will be address all of that ram.

Yep, hence my correction of my inititial blunder to advice two nVidia cards

Note that the plan currently is to get one 3970 now, and a second one later.

I am not too thrilled about 4 sticks of RAM, and I still would recommend G.Skill over OCZ, but that's more of a personal preference. But cramming four sticks of RAM into that mobo will probably give you temperature problems, and with the Reapers, you might even have spacing problems (i.e. it might just not fit). Stick with 4GB. It's more than plenty for anything right now. I've never been enthusiastic about filling all four sticks, whether it's 4x256MB, 4x512MB, or in this case , 4x2GB

PHASE 1: BUDGET $828 COST $810~
CPU - AMD PHENOM 9600 Black Edition $230
RAM - OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB $85
HDD - Seagate 80GB $41
PSU - FSP FX600 $110
GPU - BFG 8800GT $200
MOBO - GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-DS4

PHASE 2: BUDGET $338 COST $330

GPU - BFG 8800GT $200 (SLI TIME)
BRD - LITE-ON Black SATA Blu-ray DVD-ROM Drive $130

PHASE 3: BUDGET $534 COST $526
MONITOR - ViewSonic Optiquest Series Q241wb $360
HSF - Thermaltake Big Typhoon $55 DON'T FORGET AS5 FOR $6!!!
RAID HDDS - 2 x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3250310NS $160
  • OCZ is just as good, if not better than G.Skill. I didn't get mine YET.
  • Hold out on the HDD for a while. Having seperate hard drives is a better solution than just one. Especially if you want to upgrade to RAID (basically, SLI HDDs)
  • I just think the FSP is a better deal
  • The 8800GT listed would work very nicely with the high resolution with AA
  • A 28" Monitor is rediculous for gaming, IMO. This is the bases for the setup I recommend. You won't get dead pixels from Viewsonic.
  • The Thermaltake Big Tyhpoon is tried and true. pair it with AS5 and you will be very satisfied.
EDIT: 5AM CHOZART!?!?! GO TO BED.

EDIT 2: Too slow...
Just in case someone else sees this post: this is the same mistake I initially made. Can't run two nVidia cards in SLI on that motherboard! The motherboard supports Crossfire, as whe3ls indicated, hence my choice for a pair of 3970's. FSP better than PC Power & Cooling?? No way! That specific FSP model has some ripple issues at high loads, and in general, a single rail design (PC P&C) is highly preferable over a multi-rail design. Regarding the monitor: it's not only gaming, and there is nothing ridiculous about a 28" monitor . And finally, I would not hold off with the HDD. Just get the big guy. If you're not satisfied over a longer period, you can always add another one .
