err the Seagate 7200.11 750gig is only $149, might want to consider it if speed is important

Hi all,

Some folks have been wondering over the performance of the new 320GB/platter WD 640 v. the Seagate 7200.11 drives with (only) 250 GB/platter. Well, I have one of each in my brand new build (E2180 in a Gigabyte P35DS3L) and here are the results from HD Tune:

HD Tune: WDC WD6400AAKS-00A7B Benchmark
Transfer Rate Minimum : 53.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 111.0 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 89.3 MB/sec
Access Time : 12.2 ms
Burst Rate : 147.0 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 2.7%

HD Tune: ST3750330AS Benchmark
Transfer Rate Minimum : 50.6 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 108.2 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 86.6 MB/sec
Access Time : 12.6 ms
Burst Rate : 108.3 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 2.7%

Hopefully the graphs are attached.

The benefit to the WD 640Gb is the platter size. The drive is using 2 x 320Gb platters. While the 320Gb drive wasnt a steller performer, the 640Gb has been significantly improved. IMO, it is a great choice!

Yup,

The WD 640 is a nice unit. I had both (WD & ST) available when I built my latest box and I chose the WD for the boot drive, figuring it would be faster.
I was right....

The WD 320 isn't bad, it's just optimized for low noise. I may get one to use in my next build, which will be a music server. Most people who are going all out for a dedicated music server are using notebook drives for the low power, vibration and noise. I've got a separate PSU for the HDD, so I' don't care about power consumption, but noise is another matter.

agree, but I wouldn't really consider it a performance drive though. after all this WD model is mean for cost effective.

also ST 750GB is a 3 platter drive, may be you should try ST3500330AS if you want to see 2 platters performance.

don't bank into that too much when you try to compare those results....
3200AAKS is a older 2 platter drives (160X2)
ST3250820AS is a even older drive with 8mb cache that is older than grandma.
same as those 1600JS, 2500JD...they are old.
