SkullTrail Alternative? Dual CPU MOBO

Thread Starter
hey ocn,

i'm doing an economics project comparing the shorterm/longterm costs for doing a complete computer refresh by

a: buying from dell
b: building custom

my fake company needs 10 rediculous computers and 2 reception ones.

I configured a dell, and then matched it part for part with a custom one, then compared them

on the workstation side, i configured this dell

the problem is that a skulltrail motherboard is $620+ and i'm wondering if the one dell uses is available for public purchase.

Do i have to get the skulltrail? or is there another alternative

thx

You can get a Supermicro for $490. Big difference. Link

Why not use this ASUS dual LGA771?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131191R
but that is an older chipset

this one has a newer:

If you are doing this economics.... is this HS or college level? If college level, make sure to include depreciation, taxes, buy vs lease, and cost of support. (I graduate with an Econ Degree and have done this one before).

The only advantage of Skulltrail over server motherboards is SLI and overclocking. If you are looking for best performance, get a dual or quad socket motherboard and load up on CPUs.
Once again...

yeah, this is university level, lol............but noone takes the class seriously

we'll do all that present worth/inflation/depreciation/salvage value stuff once i have the rig's spec'd up (we also need a bank loan)

and we're saying that after 3 years the dell will have to be replaced but the custom computer (due to the good quality psu and case....etc) will undergo an upgrade after 3 years and be replaced after 5. our analysis will be for 10-15 years (or something like that)

thanks for the recommendations guys
