Yes the ALchemy project is still not perfect.......And no....ALchemy translates the Direct 3D to Open AL meaning that it is hardware based(Though not perfect)......

Have you seen a Xonar and a X-Fi in action? Well i have....I tested them with a Inspire T6100 and the X-Fi(Platinum) sounded much better then Xonar(D2) in games..I didnt want to test though digital though, as all creative cards cant output 5.1 in games via SPDIF.......
In both Vista and XP the X-Fi sound better in games richer, faster effects etc.........The Xonar is a nice High Fidelity card but it falls behind X-Fi in games.......

Yes the Xonar will sound better than the Razer but i think this guy wanted a card for gaming......The razer is dedicated to gaming where the Xonar is dedicated to High Fidelity Audio........

Bluegears b-Enspirer it is ^^ and lets hope eax dies completly

@ chanster ofc im interested in audio there is a reason i have a receiver and not pc speakers just not intersetd in the dac of the soundcard
(edit)
i think u need to retest in your test
there is a reason for me throwing my x-fi extreame music out the window
my old onboard audio had better sound to it using "dolby digital live"
not to mention you can doo 4.1 and 6.1 sound setup in vista this way

was talking about games too
and my onboard audiochip had better ingame sound with dolby digital live
than my x-fi did using ordenary cables
thats why i said u should do your test again using this comparison
as what format is suported dosnt matter but the end sound resoult does
it's not suposed to be fair

Amongst the cards you listed, I'd go for the Xonar D2 (if you want to get the bundle that Asus includes, which is impressive), or the Bluegears b-Enspirer. The APUs on both of these are actually the same C-Media CMI8788, though Asus runs a tweaked and renamed version on the Xonar D2), though the Xonar D2 is newer and boasts some better software optimizations (including the ability to run EAX 5.0 in some form) I've run an X-Fi (XTremeMusic) and three different cousins of the b-Enspirer (the HT Omega Claro, the Razer Barracuda AC-1, and the Auzentech X-Meridian), and I simply prefer the CMI8788's sound better than the boomy, syrupy, thick sound from the X-Fi.
