New build does not overclock well !

Hi everyone
I have just built my first new computer and it has quite alot of overclocking scope and using the simple method like the Asus AI Booster that comes with the MoBo I managed to overclock the cpu but on system restart after use it takes a few resets before it posts to windows.
I have read the Overclocking guide for this Mobo and I am changing some of the settings to Manual as suggested, just need a bit help with the memory settings. The memory is Corair Twin2X2048-6400 2 x 1gig the settings are Tested at 5-5-5-18 latency settings at 1.9V the Mobo is reading 1.87V
What are Tight settings?
Also where do you disable IDE channels as I am using Sata or are they disabled automatically?
The GPU is set on Hyperdrive using the Asus smart doc.

Welcome to OCN. You have taken the right steps so far, reading the guide and setting things in BIOS instead of using AI Booster.

Okay to set up your RAM go into BIOS and in the Extreme Tweaker menu set AI tuning to Manual. Scroll down to the FSB and Memory Config and set the FSB-Memory Clock mode to Unlinked. Now manually set your FSB to 1333 to start with and set the RAM to 800.

Go back to the Extreme Tweaker menu and go into the Overclocking section. Scroll down to Memory Timing Setting and enter the following timings;
tCL 5
tRCD 5
tRP 5
tRAS 18
Its okay to leave all the others on Auto for now.

Finally go back to the Extreme Tweaker menu and go into Over Voltage. In memory voltage set it to 1.9v as Corsair recommends. You will also want to manually set your other voltages as well. A good starting point would be;
vCore 1.35v
1.2v HT 1.2v
NB 1.35
SB 1.5v
CPU VTT 1.55v

That will give you a good starting point to overclock your system.

Finally to disable your IDE channels, go to the Advanced menu and enter IDE function setup. Disable Onchip IDE channel0 and you are good to go.

With that set of ram you won't be able to go much higher then 2.8Ghz. 400 (FSB) x 7 (CPU multi) that is.

Thanks Franz/Acoma andy
Hey, thanks for the quick and detailed settings advice will get on to it in the next few hours.
Good to get help like this, makes you feel like your not alone, my confidence in this board quickly when down hill when i had paid so much money and you ask the basics from the board and it lets you down.
Will keep you informed
cheers

Hi Franz
Have completed all the settings as per your post, so i gather that all over clocking for the CPU/Memory should be done in the Bios and not using AI Tuning.

I haven't looked at the graphics card yet I have just set it in Hyperdrive mode using "Smart Doctor" but it looks pretty easy to change the settings.

If I just wanted to Overclock my system say by 20% what would be the settings on the
CPU and the GPU ? if its not to much to ask.

Mind you I only have Company of Heroes & Microsoft Flight Sim X and both run well on 1280 x 768 at 60Hz with just about everything switched on.

I have added all the new data and settings into the " New build March 08" Link

we really cant tell you want setting you really have to find out what wroks for your setup but i do believe theirs a p5n32-e info and overclocking thread which should able to help you. to overclock your video card use rivatuner or ati tools and DONT USE NTUNE THATS A NO NO

Welcome that is a great MB for a 2 core CPU, but as stated you need to OC in bios. some of the Asus OC programs just do not work well. I had mine up to 3.4 with an e6600 just following the guild post here.

Take yor time Good Luck

As he has an Nvidia board he should be able to unlink the RAM from the FSB. So the RAM shouldn't really be an issue.

That is right. From now on you will be doing all CPU and RAM overclocking through the BIOS. You can go right ahead and uninstall AI Booster, you wont need it anymore.

The graphics card will be overclocked through windows, but I would recommend using Rivatuner to do that. You can test the stability using ATiTool or 3DMark

Overclocking the CPU 20% should be no problem, but probably not the GPU. Just start with the CPU with the voltages I recommended, then start increasing the FSB by 5-10MHz until it doesnt POST. When you reach that point back down the FSB and start testing for stability using Orthos. Just keep an eye on your temps using CoreTemp.
