Advice for budget new gaming build

Thread Starter
My Dell 3100C is rubbish and according to the advice I've had from the graphics card forum its gonna be very difficult to upgrade and won't be worth the hassle.

So I'm looking to build a gaming PC on a budget. I like all games so want an all-rounder. I've got £250 approx $500 (yeah I know its low - i'm a poor student) to spend so it's not gonna be fancy, but I could do with some advice on what hardware to get and obviously I want to build the best I can for the cash I've got available. I've already got a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers.

I understand that the Intel CPUs are outperforming Athlon's
[URL="http://techreport.com/articles.x/12091"] so think I'm gonna go for a Dual 2 Duo if I fit into the budget. Any opinions?

Gonna need the right balance between CPU, motherboard and graphics card etc to fit into my budget, and could also do with advice on the power supply and any necessary cooling units to go with it.

I'm new to this building lark so your help would go down a treat. cheers

Hmmm. Forgot about those. You probably have to cut down the proc to a lower model.

Just get a cheap dvd-rw for around $30. For os you can get an oem of vista home premium for $100 or linux (free) or you can always aquire a copy if you have access to them at school or work

Yeah, cheers. nearly right! Think a 18x optical drive will suffice. Spotted a thread about free Vista thru the Microsoft feedback program, looks like it won't start up again till april and i'm not sure you can get it in the UK, but I'll consider the OS outside of the build budget for now - looking to go for Vista...good idea?

plus i've just spotted this guide http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...budget-1k.html - its gonna be outta date now I presume

I run vista 64 and have no problem with it. There isn't much of an advantage over XP except for eye candy. Your choice. Also if you choose 64bit you need 4gb of ram. Otherwise choose the 32 bit one. Btw didn't notice you were in the UK so I have no idea what site to use to get prices for you. >.<
