I want something that can play oblivion!!

Thread Starter
I only have enough money for a Gigabyte 9600GT. Will it play Oblivion on high with HDR or Bloom on? Also, will it be able to cope with newer games like Crysis and CoD4 and STALKER? I've read up on the net that the 9600GT requires at least 26A on the +12v rail, is that true? My power supply only says under the +12v bit 17A, does this mean that i cant use it? Also, my PSU doesnt have a 6 pin power connector for PCIE, will the adapter compensate for it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
So my two questions -
--Will my PSU be able to provide the needs of a 9600GT(It's only 17A on 12v)
--Will the 9600GT be able to play games on high FPS, like 35 and still look great? Or will i have to sacrifice quality for FPS? Right now i can play Oblivion on my integrated 6150SE with all settings disabled except have view distance on max and distant trees on(distant buildings off), will a 9600GT be able to play the game with all setting on? Also, will it play Gears of War?

Thanks.

9600GT will easily play oblivion maxed with most texture mods even... Its basically equal to a 8800GT.

You'll likely need a new PSU.. 17a on the 12v is pretty crappy.

That card won't play crysis at 35FPS but it'll run it on high, but should max out COD4, Stalker, and Oblivion even at higher resolutions.

Your comparing intergrated to a new GPU... the 9600GT is probably 75x faster than that 6150SE intregrated.. and i'm not exageratting.

I could always try and see what happens with the PSU. Whats the worst that could happen? Also, i have a PSU with 18A on the +12V Rail, will that be any better? Could the 9600GT play Crysis on Med-High settings, looking great, and not lagg(on a res of 1024x768)?

The worse thing that could happen is your whole system could get ruined.. its not wise to hook up a PSU thats below the min specs.. i've heard some pretty serious cases.

Yes it'll be able to run crysis on high, some very high.. If you playing at 1024x768 resolution... your going to be bottlenecked extremely at that resolution.... These cards are ment to run higher than that... 1024x768 is a resolution that was mainstream like 3 years ago..

Get a better psu, 18a is not enought for a 9600gt.

An 430w Thermaltake with 18a was not enought for a 8600gts I had. It started locking up and refusing to boot.

You'll also want to overclock that cpu as to prevent it from bottlenecking any new card you put in.

Yes, 9600GT is the best option, Or the 8800 GS, although that has not as good ram. So i'd go 9600.

Ok, so if i put the res up into the 12xx by 10xx's will it do any good? Wont it be a struggle for my CPU to play at high res? I could always get a AMD Athlon X2 6000 but that would mean that i couldnt get a 9600GT....what would be better now you think?

The problem is, that i only have enough money for a 9600GT, so if i buy a PSU for $60 to power up a 9600GT, then i wont have the money for a 9600GT!

I think that I should just see what happens with the PSU i already have and if i need a new one, once i bought the graphics card, ill just save. I' only 15, just turned, so getting money isnt that easy, especially when you got tight parents lol...

Cheers, Apocolypze

I wouldn't go below 1600x1200 or its just a waste of the card.. but thats just me.. most people are on widescreen LCDs now and runnng 1680x1050 or 1920x1200... and the few crazy people running 2560x1600.

Looks like youll need to save up a bit more money
-You need a new PSU
-If you upgrade your GPU it'll likely bottleneck, unless your running 1680x1050 or higher.
-Need a new CPU to stop the bottleneck

Your first buy needs to be the PSU... your computer aint gonna boot with that PSU and that card. Why buy a graphics card to just have it sit there?

this may be irrelevant to you, but i would recommend the 8800gt, its definitely worth the extra money. But i definitely understand budgets.

Would an Athlon X2 6000 AM2 make the cut to stop the bottleneck? Could i run the 16xx resolution on a 17" CRT or would it just look all small and stuff? Why would it bottleneck, could someone explain? I thought that at higher resolutions, that it would be easier for the CPU and GPU?? Oh well, are you sure that my system wont boot with a gay power supply? Man computers are so f***** complicated!

Ok would another option for my computer be a 7800GT? I've heard they're alright, are they better than a 8600GTS? Cos if i cant buy a 9600GT, should i go for a 8600GTS? Would my PSU even be able to power an 8600GTS?
So, would a 7800GT be better than an 8600GTS? Or even a 7950GX2?
Ok, im just gonna try with the crappy PSU and oh well, w/e happens happens, if it wrecks, ill send it back to the shop i bought it from...
