yes and performance is not EVERYTHING... you need good size (weight) and battery life... without these you have to get your work done fast or else you wont have any battery life to finish it.. I mean honestly you need a good mixture of all of those in ONE laptop... and ppl see that in a mac and thas why they buy it

I don't have an anti-virus installed on my computer and I've never got a virus...

Linux FTW.

But seriously, why bother buying a high-end laptop at all? I'm getting an old P4 lappy and putting Ubuntu on it for college. Do you really need the laptop to run high-end software or games? I know here at OCN we are in "the pursuit of performance", but have you ever looked at a laptop and went, "Wow, if I had that lappy I could pwn the desktops with it's power!" Of course you haven't. If you take in to consideration the real world applications of laptops, you'll realize that anything above a P3 will fulfill your needs. Even at that, if all you do with it is take notes and surf the interwebz, a P2 running an extremely light Linux will give A+ results.

So go on and spend your $1000+ on your lappy and get a 2.6 GHz dual core that can't really be overclocked well. I'll just spend my $1000 dollars on a quad core and over clock the crap out of it.

If you see me in college, I'll be the guy carrying the old Dell P4 brick that has a cool african boot sound.

I agree.

If you're going to RAID in a laptop, that's gonna use battery. I don't think it's entirely economical to have 2 HDDs running to get a couple apps to open in 1.0 seconds instead of 1.4 seconds.

And I prefer a SLOWER CPU for a laptop for the reason of saving battery life! Who would have thought? I would also have liked a 4200RPM HDD instead of a 5400, but alas, the most practical is the 5400. 4200RPM is just too slow, although it would raise battery life.

lol nice TBH the only reason i went for my laptop is more size and battery life man i mean Im willing to spend the money to get something a bit more comfortable to carry and will last long so i dont have to take my charger everywhere. but you absolutely right about not really needing it for a laptop the apps jut dont really nead it its just more for comfortability just how someone who can get a new Ferrari spends al that money on it because it looks sooo good (but the milage sucks ) when he could have just gotten a new Honda and gotten better milage and an ok look(I have a Honda) but you can also just go for a used old VW which will fullfill the reason for it to get you from point A to B its ur decision

Linux vs windows is now a mooch point I will never have below 2gb ram. I have a 400$ eeepc thats overclocked with 2gb which i use when I feel like it... It runs everything except games fine. Not much more I can do to the desktop either..

If you haven't noticed, we buy stuff because we want to, not always because its "needed". If I didn't have a quad core and a gaming pc, I would not buy the laptop. I was considering MBP for awhile too, but after seeing a lot about them I see more and more how their users are, and I will never be like that. They have their benefits, just none suite me, if you can understand that. More power to you with the P4 brick I ran ubuntu on the 600$ amd x2 lappy I had for a long time and enjoyed it.

But would drive the Ferrari all the time or would you sport the Honda? Personally I'd leave my Ferrari at home and use it for totally destroying people in things like racing and looks. However, for everyday use, I'd take the Honda. (I'm trying to connect my previous post)

BTW: You're spelling is awful, Firefox does have a spell checker built in you know. (mileage! not milage!)
