Come on benny....the only thing than can come close to a prelude is the Xonar.....It will be on par if it wasn't for the preludes gaming capabilities and slightly higher Fidelity........Drivers maybe not good as the Xonar but getting a Prelude over a Xonar will be worth it!

Question (asked just to be sure): Have you listened to a Xonar at all, or a Claro? Or are you just advising based on someone else's reviews?

X-Fi alternative: Look for any sound card with an APU that isn't an X-Fi. The best alternative I know about is the C-Media CMI8788 (a.k.a. Oxygen CMI8788). I've run an X-Fi XtremeMusic, and compared to three (!) different sound cards which run the CMI8788, the X-Fi just sounds thick and boomy.

Cards with the CMI8788 that I've run: HT Omega Claro; Razer Barracuda AC-1 (a card maligned for no good reason in these parts -- probably by people who have never used one, in my opinion); Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 DTS (my favorite sound card). Though they all use the same CMI8788 chip, how the card is put together makes a huge difference to the sound.

HT Omega Claro = Very good in music, movies; sub-par in gaming positional audio.

Razer Baraccuda AC-1 = Good in music; better in movies, games than Claro.

Auzentech X-Meridian = Excellent in music, movies; for some reason, this is also the best CMI8788 card for gaming positional audio I've tried after tweaking the settings.

Hope this helps.
