EVGA 790i board issue

Sorry its long but telling all details.

So got my board in Friday and had the system together that night, as of today 2 hrs ago I have RMA the board. Basically first time I started it Friday it seamed to work fine, never shut it down just restarted it a lot when installing updates and games and such, even upgraded the bios just to be safe. Played games and man it was impressive, sli GTS 8800 EVGA cards (G92) was amazing, considering my old system is 5 years old its a huge upgrade. But on Saturday actuality had to turn off the system fully for whatever reasons. So power down hit the power button and all the fans and leds came to life for 1/2 a second then it all shut down. The motherboard would go form just the stand buy power led on to the stand buy power and the memory power led's being light up. After this to do anything have to power down the board from the power supply, let the board drain then try again. Took several attempts before it would start and post but once it did there where no issues except for video playback.

So spend most of sat night gaming and trying to work on the video playback issue. Basically start a video and 10 seconds to several minutes, the video would play but all of a sudden the system would freeze completely, even the lcd display on the keyboard would not even change, would have to reboot the system. Figured it was codec issues, never figured it out but with the rebooting I would also just turn off the pc as well for whatever reason and when powered down I get to really see the full extent of the issue with the board, it took up to 10 times to get the thing to start.

Today got up and called EVGA they suggested pulling parts from the board something I was already in the middle of doing. So continued on that, found out thta just taking the SLI bridge out, but leaving the 2 boards installed would reduce the occurrences from 90% to about 5% chance of happening but it still occurred. Removing one board, swapping boards int he primary slot, and trying both PCIE power rails on my power supply on the board made no difference. Called EVGA again, and they suggested pullig the motherboard out of the case hooking it up and trying that to see if the board had a short ont he case, did that nothign called again, they suggested running memtest and orthos to confirm the memory and the cpu where fine, no issues there at all.

So can't rule out the power supply but considering the load is a hell of a lot greater ing ames then on general startup it points more at the motherboard, EVGA suggested it could be a bad capacitor or something smiler. I am not sure if its related to the video playback issue, if it is great as it dose seam video card related if not then ok deal with that later.

Now I have already done the RMA paperwork as suggested by tech support and hell its already been approved for cross shipping, should get a new board this week hopping by wed if they ship tomorrow as I went with the higher end rma process that was 12$ which is almost as cheep as me just shipping to them the old board.

As for EVGA on a Sunday they took several tech calls, no wait times over 1 min, everyone had a clue there, gave suggestions ides and whatever else. And they where even happy I will willing to problem solve and work with them instead of yelling t them, very please with the support so far, these video cards and board are my first EVGA products but because of the response so far I would easily buy there product in the future.

Question:

But I do not send the board back until the new one arrives, so I have t for a few days yet. So is anyone knows a test I could try, or any info on a very closely related problem I am all ears. Want to make sure that I don't miss somethings and have a different issue then a bad Motherboard.

if you have another power supply try using it instead. Take out all the essentials leave 1 stick of ram and 1 graphcis card.

sounds like it could also be a psu problem.

tried all that except for the PSU, I do not have a PSU that could do the job. Thought I mentioned tried 1 or and 2 cards (with and without sli). Tried using as little as passable IE 1 ram stick, no case fans(except cpu), one card, no optical drives, and nothing.

I completely agree it could also be a psu issue, but even tried both rails on this thing for the PCIE and it occured on both even, and once the system got started beside video playback screwing me up the system was EXTREAMLY stable even under heavy load with everything connected, gaming or stress testing good so yes agree power supply could be part of the issue but that dose not explain the sli part of this. If I leave both cards in sli bridged 90% chance of occurance. But if I leave the 2 cards in and remove the bridge then it occurs only 5% of the time. Now I bet that sli requires a little more juice then without bar but that to me sound more like issue in motherboard to be honest. But I will not rule out the PowerSupply. If the board on the way dose not work, same issue then its for sure the power supply so we will see, but seams unlikely but still passable.

OK well the new board came i and that one gave me C1 errors on the ram but only in the 2 slots closest to the cpu and still had that flash on then off issue. Ok talked to EVGA again they got me back on the original board, no c1 ram checks out ok. So they get me to try a program called SpeedFan and look at the 12volt number, says 10.45 ok sure fine its the power supply they think and so do I. Figure its got bear min to run the board so run out get a 850 watt cool master powersupply the guy at the microcenter near me highly recommended over the thermaltake ones. Also pick up a power supply tester that even hs a digital readout so I can see the number work.

So get home test the thermaltake 1000watt power supply with the tester and it tests out perfect, 12 volts right on, no issues on any rails or anything, messed up. Test the new coolmaster 850 watt same thing everything checks out. So plug colmaster into the board and all of a sudden no issues on startup all is well. Still got the video freezing the system but thats most likely a software/codec issue like I was originally thinking. So both supply's checkout but coolmaster works in system, no idea why but It works and its cheaper then the 1000watt thermaltake one anyway so guess that one going back. So ya completely messed up but hey if it works and I can game and do some c/c++/java code I don't care.
