8600GTS max temp?

I'm about to use RivaTuner 2.08 to oc my EVGA 8600GTS SC (sig rig), and I am just curious: since it always idles at 50°C (I use CPUID's HardwareMonitor), I'm just wondering: at which temperatures should I start to get nervous? What's the maximum temp I should allow?

I don't need any recommendations for GPU cooling. I know about it. That's in the plans for the future. But I can't afford it for a while.

I would definitely keep it under 80*C, preferably around 75*C full load until you get a better cooler. Then you can obviously take it further.

Is there also a place on the internet that tells me what the highest rated temp for this video card is (kinda like the chart I once saw somewhere on the Intel cpu's)?

Remember, GPU's aren't like CPU's, they're built to get hot. A general rule of thumb is 40-60*C is cool, 60-80*C normal/hottish, and above that is pretty hot and generally unacceptable for long-term use (depending on the card).

So like I said, keep it around 75*C and you won't have a problem. Shouldn't take you long to save up the $30 it costs for a GPU cooler, anyway. After the cooler, heat will be a non-issue until you volt-mod, and even then you'd have to feed it some serious juice.

With my 8600GT VM'd to 1.60 core (stock 1.33) and 2.10 memory (stock 1.80 or 1.85, can't remember) and overclocked to 920 core, 940 (1880) memory, and 2024 shader, with the Coolermaster Coolviva Pro SE, at idle I sit at 41*C and 58-61*C under load (depending on app./game).

Just keep it around 75*C for now, and after you get the cooler on there, it will be a non-issue.

These 8600GTS get extremely hot! I idled at 60*C (added Tim, fcked up, and now idle a 69*C) At load w/o changing tim, i made 94*C. These cards do not throttle till 100*c so I'd personally try to keep it under 90*C. Defintely recommend you get some aftermarket cooling (cough selling a thermalright v2 new).

Thank you for linking to that thread. I've been looking for it! I was going to reference that thread in THIS one, but I couldn't remember enough about it to make any intelligible references to it.

Regarding the Thermaltake V2, why are you selling it? I mean, doesn't it work like you wanted it to, or what's up with it? And can you show me what it looks like? Can you show me a web page where I can look at it and see information about it too?

Hey whats goin on 5 Cheeze. I'm pretty sure i have the same card Evga 8600GTS 256Mb DDR3. When i am in game mine will normally reach 80 C and idles low like yours i forget exactly. So i believe the temps you see are normal and nothing to worry about.

Hey, not much bonz. How are ya?

Yeah, she idles at about 50°C (well, it's at 49°C now). Hmm, I'll have to see what my in-game is by leaving Hardware Monitor open since it tells me the maximum and minimum temps that were reached since it was opened.

I just toyed around in Tron 2.0 for a few minutes to see how hot it gets, and Hardware Monitor says that it reached a maximum temp of 73°C. But, I was just walking around, and there were no enemies. But this area I was in looked like it was giving the video card as hard of a workout as Tron 2.0 probably can.

I also opened up the Need for Speed ProStreet Demo, and that also got it up to 73°C.

Hmm. I'm half tempted to download the Crysis demo just to give my card a real workout to test how good the stock cooling really is since it appears to be pretty good.
