Good mobo for e8400 and 9600gt.

Thread Starter
im planning on the Asus 780i.

but whats a good mobo i should get (below $300)
im planning on the E8400 for sure and SLI (duel) 9600gt. so PCI-E 16x 2.0 is a must.

im also planning on overclocking the CPU to at least 3.6ghz.
does 780i get really hot?
heard XFX/EVGA 780i (99% the same) gets pretty hot with the 45nm chips...

If you're going to sli should get a 790i for better performance, though the price will be > 300.

I just bought this motherboard to use with my E8400:

Asus P5E X38 Chipset

From what I hear they are really good together. I'm also going to be using nvidia gpu on this as well.

Go with a P35 or X38 chipset if you don't need SLI.

if your going SLI soon then a 780i would be great if not a DFI dark would be perfect.

I just got my 780i last week. Digging it so far. With my TRUE I idle at around 25c and hit 36c at load, give or take a couple of degrees depending on the ambient temp. I wouldn't be able to tell you how performance is with SLI, maybe in a few months.

If you're in the market for a 780i, I'd go with EVGA's. They're step up program and customer service are a huge plus.

the 780i is the best board for you. i know from experience the 680i sucks at overclocking the E8400. my max is 4.45 on 1.51 Vcore while i have had this in a X38 and posted at 5.0 at 1.5Vcore. and ran 4.5 at 1.42vcore.
