8800GT or 9600GT or HD3870.

Thread Starter
I am in the market for a new graphic card. My budget gives me around 225$ to work with.
I am looking at some cards from both ATi and nVIDIA.
9600GT
8800GT
HD3870

I need a card to play Crysis. As I am a gamer and wish to play these new generation of games. It is apperant that the 8800GT is a great card. The 9600GT uses less power and runs cooler though, and tags just a little bit behind the 8800GT. But I need all the performance I can get for the money. I am going to purchase the card from newegg. The ATi Radeon HD3870 isnt enough. I need performance in Crysis, and that seems to be an area where ATi cards struggle. So, Considering I do go for a 8800GT. Which brand should I buy. I don't want a Over-Clocked card, as the 8800s run warm enough as it is. I am currently looking at a PNY and a eVGA. But I would like more information on the eVGA "Step-Up" program, as it is something that gets my attention.

I need Alot of help here guys, so I am open to suggestions.

The 8800GT's are actually a fairly cool running card IMO. I am running mine fully passive with an Accelero S1 and my idle is 42C, load 51C. That is with the superclocked version. I've gone all the way up to 720 core and never topped 60C load. That is pretty darn cool for fanless cooling.

Honestly if Crysis is what you want to play, you want the most performance you can get. The 9600GT is a great card, but that little extra from the 8800GT will help in this game, even at 1280x1024.

Lately, there have been some problems reported with the 9600. For that price, i would recomend looking around if you can find a 8800GTS, their prices went really down in the last days. As im a nVidia fan, i would have to say 8800gt > 3870 Both are great cards tho.

Id say 8800 gt but the 3870 and 9600 gt are cheaper

I want best performance I can get for that price range.
As well, I don't plan on installing any aftermarket heatsink/fan unit.

Yes. $207 after rebate

An 8800GTS's stock fan is a lot better than the GT's single slot stock fan and a GTS performs better

You might want a new PSU for it though

EDIT:

Since you're on a 17" monitor, I'm assuming you're gaming at low resolutions
If that's the case, get a 3870 (Support AMD so there's more competition )
The 9600GT and 3870 perform very similarly

Go with the 8800GT man you'll most likely get the new revision with the better fan on it which runs cooler and quieter and you're set. OC that sucker as much as you can and crank up the fan to 50% or 60% and play away
