It only uses 1 slot on the motherboard, all high end cards use dual slot coolers.

Yeah, its pretty much dead even with a pair of 8800GTX's in most games, give or take 5fps each way.
You are right, you could buy 2 cards for less money and get equal performance, however not everyone has a SLI motherboard and also with the GX2 you open up the possibility of Quad SLI.
