9800x2 Over-rated?

Thread Starter
Okay, I may be wrong, but I just haven't seen what's so great about the 9800x2. It takes up two slots, it's two GPUs. More or less, it's equivalent to two cards in SLI, no? It originally costed around 600$, seems like it's dropped to about 560. That's still 280$ per GPU, which are similar to the 8800GTs... Why not just buy two GT's for 400$ give or take? Or even a higher card... I don't get it.

Not to mention that someone that wants 4 gpus in the future can't use 4 gt's? It's great for what it is, it just might not be for you.

"what's so great about the 9800x2"

It offers SLi performance without needing an SLI motherboard, fastest single slot solution available.

"It takes up two slots"
It only uses 1 slot on the motherboard, all high end cards use dual slot coolers.

"More or less, it's equivalent to two cards in SLI, no?"
Yeah, its pretty much dead even with a pair of 8800GTX's in most games, give or take 5fps each way.

You are right, you could buy 2 cards for less money and get equal performance, however not everyone has a SLI motherboard and also with the GX2 you open up the possibility of Quad SLI.

Additionally, Peeps with non-SLI mobos can run now run "SLI".

note: there are a couple of mobos out there that support both SLI and Crossfire: Skulltrail and the (upcoming ?) Rampage Extreme.

Because you can't SLI on an Intel mobo you have to get the GX2, but since probably by July you'll be able to buy a single GPU card for the same FPS I hardly see the point myself.
