Combing Case Fan Power Pins to mobo... possible?

Thread Starter
I am looking to control all my case fans through software / sensors of some sort. Since I have an Antec 900, I am able to push a lot of air through the case, however it gets very loud on the highest settings.

With this solution, I will be able to keep the fans on the lowest settings (or off) when just doing casual work, and when I fire up all the fans to cool my overclocked GPU/RAM/CPU.

However, I'm not sure how to go about doing this, since all my fans have molex power connections. I had heard that it's possible to connect it to the motherboard, but I have no idea where to begin. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

This might not be the best idea. How many fans are you planning on running and do you know what the amp draw is. If your board is like mine it has 8 fan headers and running 8 fans off the motherboard might be too much strain. For example my board has a max draw 1A-2.2A.

Next any tuning of the fans would probably have to be done through the BIOS, since Speedfan doesn't support fan control on that board.

You will have to get a 4pin(molex)-3pin adapter. That will allow you to plug the fans into the motherboard.

Next you have to figure out which fan headers allow fan control in the BIOS. For example on my ASUS only the headers labeled CHA_FAN and OPT_FAN 1-3 have fan speed control.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Of course you could get a fan controller like this or this.

EDIT: Look at this post from the 680 guide.
