ABIT IP35Pro Random Freezing

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Completed build in January (see signature), and since then have been getting random (no discernable pattern) freezing of system. Have to reboot using reset (power off doesn't work). This happens with system idle, and under light load, but has never happened when under heavy load such as running Prime 95/Orthos for 24 hrs.

At first though it was USB mouse problem, then determined that no peripherals (scanner, phone and camera data cables) were working. Then switched out USB mouse and Keyboard for PS/2, and freeze still happens.

Other than program(s) I'm working with, only background programs are Abit Uguru, and MS Task Master.

Thought it could be voltage/OC related, so set everything to back to Auto in Bios, and still happens.

System, CPU and Core temps all < 45C under Prime/Orthos Load, and < 20C at idle, all drivers and bios are current, and I've run out of ideas, so any and all ideas/suggestions welcome.
Thanks

What version of the BIOS are you running?

Also, have you tried flipping the CMOS switch to see if that fixes the issue?

my guess is it's the motherboard.

i get freezes when i try to power my portable eSATA 160GB through USB. it un-freezes when the disk spins up.

but you said you had no USB peripherals..... i can only guess it's some error with internal stuff such as HDD?

Have the same problem. I've associated it with my sata dvd but I can't determine what sequence of events while using the DVD causes the problem. I suspect that it has something to do with having a raid-0 array on the same controller that the dvd is connected to.

First-Thanks to all for such prompt and thoughtfull responses.

[p]-Bios version 14, and yes to flipping CMOS switch, unless you mean before using reset-I haven't done that.

wuyanx-My original post wasn't clear-What I meant to say, was that I do have other USB periphs, and that the freeze still happens even when I connect mouse and keyboard via PS/2 instead of USB.

cgd-I have no RAID set up, but do have four SATA devices (three HDD, and DVD-RW).
Thanks again

Taking everyone's advice and suggestions, and checking some other sites, I have now been "freeze free" for three days.

Keeping in mind that mine is an overclocked Vista x64, here's what I did:
1-stopped all background monitoring, such as uGuru, HWMonitor, CPU-Z, etc;
2. Switched my keyboard from USB to p/s 2 connection, leaving Mouse as USB;
3. Changed my "POWER OPTIONS" from "Balanced" to "High Performance" (Control Panel-Classic/Power Options/High Performance).
4. Bumped my SB voltage from 1.19v to 1.25v.
5 Then ran Orthos for 12 hours;
6.Then let system sit idle for 24 hours.
If I remain "Freeze free" for another week, I will confirm via another post.

FYI-Here are my current voltage settings:
CPU-1.40v; DDR2-2.000; VTT-1.27v; MCH-1.33v; ICH-1.35v; ICHIO-1.55v; DDR2REF-0%; CPU GTLREF 0&2 1&3-67%.
A bit high I think, but once I'm satisfied the "Freeze" is resolved, I will start lowering.
